Business casual attire for a breakfast with the governor. How would you interpret that and how would you dress?

Second question, what does one chat about with a governor?

Slacks or khakis, a dress or polo shirt, tie and/or sport jacket as you choose.

A nice backless number really makes an entrance if you have the poise to pull off a bit of a twirl. Otherwise stick to dressing like an attorney from Law and Order.

If there aren't any broads around I hear it's customary to talk about pawing at them and such. Also, use the word "broad" and a lot of profanity so they know you are classy like a boss right from the git-go!

As far as conversation is concerned Governors are just people so talk to them about whatever you normally talk to strangers about. Also, most public officials are used to making small talk so they'll probably lead the conversation.

Also, always clutch stemware around the bulb of the glass like it's a can of beer so you don't look weak holding it.

Always stuff an entire appetizer in your mouth no matter how awkward - eating any catered finger food in bites is guaranteed to end up on your shirt and between your fingers. Stick to the cheese cubes if this is your first rodeo. It takes some experience to lick your fingers with just the right panache to go unnoticed.

Personally I feel it's better to overdress than under-dress, so I would wear either a suit or pants with a blazer. It's breakfast, though, so I wouldn't wear a tie.

Try talking to him about removing a governor on a small engine and see if it makes him uncomfortable.

Good thinking... I'm changing my suggestion. Sequined tuxedo, top hat and cane. Make sure the cane lights up in colors when it strikes the ground.

Slacks, nice button down, sport coat. Tie should be optional, to me at least. If you regularly wear one, yes, if not, don't.

As for conversation.... If it's work setting this up, obviously talk about business. if it's some other arrangement,I suggest avoiding politics at all costs while kissing his ass whether you picked him or not. Try fishing or cars or a little googling to find something you're both interested in.

I've never met with a governor, but senators and Joe Biden(during campaign, not while vp) fell under those "rules"(guidelines? Suggestions?) When I met them.

I'd suggest wearing a monocle. That can classy up any outfit. A pocket watch would be over the top however.

Attire-wise, 'business casual' you're usually best off with nice slacks, a button-down dress shirt and a tie. Sport coat/jacket is allowed, but typically puts you closer to 'business formal' than casual. Technically a polo or the dress shirt with no tie falls under the umbrella of 'business casual', but in this case I'd say dress toward the higher end of it.

As to what to talk about... with our governor? I'd not be willing to try and talk about much of anything except sports, anything that could be remotely turned into politics I'd probably get myself thrown out.

I agree. Suit, no tie. Always overdress.

Governors et al wear "suits" all the time, business casual is a suit that doesn't match. Khakis, boat shoes (casual shoes), nice button down and a tie with a sport coat. You can always shuck the jacket and tie if necessary but at the ready if required.

Talking with a politician? Oy.
Stay away from things like the death sentence, abortion and guns.

What's the function? Kids R us, Homelessness, Battered Women? Talk the topic, smile and nod, keep your hands visible at all times. he's covered by State Cops.

We don't want to see you on the 11:00 news.....

This is what uve worn every time I had an office day for the last 15 years. And steel toe boots (i dont own any other shoes). Polo on days i was working with clients. New company said business casual, and when I asked for clarification i was told khaki pants (cargo is cool) and a polo.

First and foremost, clean and well-fitting. Shirt tucked in. Ties and jackets seem to be completely unnecessary these days, but if it were me: dark gray worsted trousers, blue oxford shirt, navy and red striped tie, navy blazer, brown or burgundy loafers or oxfords. Socks should be some shade of the same color as trousers.

Edit: Missed the bit about this being a breakfast. Khakis, sport shirt and good shoes. Forget the tie and jacket, unless that's how you roll on the regular.

This is a government official you are visiting. Maybe on business? Let him know you speak his language
