The one I have now is an Almost Rodney Mullen. I ordered it from TGM skateboards as a complete, and ordered a set of Thunder trucks and Bones bearings with it. It is far nicer than anything I had as a teenager.

There are lots of good brands, more than I can keep track of. Alien Workshop, blind, enjoi, flip, etc.
Hook it up GRM style, talk to your local shop and build it yourself. The best part of putting your own board together is cutting something cool into the grip tape design. He'll really dig that it was something Dad did custom for him. Sadly my old Small room board has been in effect teaching my son and the neighborhood kids how to ride and pick their stance.
If going the blank route, I've scored my last few boards from blankdecks.com . Canadian maple ftw.
The dual durometer wheels are also pretty sweet.

No, I think one of the other mods did that. Another canoe floated in here this morning and has already been sunk.
I got one for my younger son. He's super excited. Last night after he opened it we had to spend the rest of the night watching skate videos on YouTube. It's great to see the enthusiasm.
