My first purchase from eBay was a car, in about 2004. Bought a fair amount of stuff, sold a few things. Had pretty good luck overall. Got burned once as a buyer, PayPal made it good.
I've found that some of the mail order vendors like Summit and Jegs will give you better prices from their eBay store than their regular website. Shipped is often faster too.
On the other hand, eBay can be more expensive than regular mail order, or Amazon.
I sold a lot about ten years ago, stuff I couldn't move any other reasonable way, made some pretty decent money for a winter hobby. Car and bike parts, antique tools, automotive brochures, sent an old typewriter to SA once. NZ was good for car parts. Then their policy shifted from average seller to stores so I lost interest. I could still sell but why bother.
I got burned on shipping on a couple items because irresponsible buyer, I shipped it twice.
I may still buy there if Amazon doesn't have it but that's rarely. There's deals to be had there yet.

USPS has geotrackig on every scan. No one wants you to know that it’s available and the union hates it. Raise a ruckus and they can confirm within three feet of the scan.

I caught a few carriers doing that when I worked for amazon. They no longer represent the organization.
