I'm sort of looking for another vehicle in the sub $4K range.

Requirements?

20+ MPG

Seat 6 occasionally, legally.

Avoid minivans.

Go!

20+ highway? I'd be looking at various domestic sedans with a bench seat. P71 pops to the mind, but it is not a small car.

Rear facing seats are a mixed bag. Wife wouldn't let me put the kiddoes back there, and their carseats probably wouldn't have fit anyways. When those were made, the car seats were smaller and used to a younger age. The range of ages where they can be used is pretty small, and I can't imagine it's a very safe place to put your kiddoes.

So, I would shy away from them, as cool as they are.

My Mazda5 is technically not a minivan (registration classes it as a station wagon ), but it is probably too big, and only a really crappy one would be near the $4k mark...

First gen Ford Falcon or Chevy Nova with some sort of overdrive transmission swapped in.
