Trail of slime leads German customs to bags of giant snails

BERLIN (AP) — German customs officials say a trail of slime led them to a stash of almost 100 giant African land snails and other items hidden inside bags at Duesseldorf Airport this month.

In a statement Friday, authorities said officials stumbled over one of the snails on a baggage truck and initially thought it was a toy until it started moving.

The snails were handed to an animal rescue service in Duesseldorf and the meat was destroyed, customs officials said.

Animal rescue service? They're such a terrible invasive species that I expected them to be put directly into an incinerator.

Yeah there was an outbreak in south Florida and they went medieval on them. I think there was something about them eating concrete block.

The animal rescue service was in France.  In unrelated news, there is a sudden increase in the demand for butter in Northwestern France...

The Wildlife Resource Commission in NC has been posting recipes for some invasive species. I think it's a good idea.
