More power to them for improving stuff. My beef is more in trying to engineer a way around personal responsibility. Then again, maybe I'm I ludite for enjoying driving and not wanting personal transportation to be a passive event.

That was . . . awesome.
That said, I do seethe quietly inside everytime I see that Mercedes commercial where all those people were practically smug about "not paying attention, but my Mercedes was".
Gives me the heebie-jeebies
hopefully features like automatic braking and such don't become mandatory, in 20 years I do NOT want my Lotus deciding that I don't know jack when it comes to when to start braking. I'm all for passive design features to reduce injury to those struck by cars, especially if it helps prevent damage to the car as well. park by braille wouldn't end well for a car with a fiberglass or CF front end, but pedestrian friendly flexible plastic would fare a lot better. but passive pedestrian savers/mind numbing devices? no thank you, keep that technology OFF of the roadways I use, I don't need to be sharing the road with people who think that their car can drive for them before that actually becomes the norm.
I'm just waiting for a certain someone to come in here and start talking a about how he wants 5 BILLION airbags in his/his wife's car.
You know who I am talking about, and if he thinks I'm ever going to let him live that comment down he is WRONG!

I once wrapped my wife in bubble wrap, is that close?

It may not be God given, but most states automatically give the pedestrian the right of way even if they're doin' it wrong!
No flames please, this is just an observation...the place I see it the most is in heavily welfared portion of town. They just walk out in the street and dare you to hit them. They may come from any direction at any time. The younguns are the worst - especially Jr. High age.
The sags make it so that if they miscalculate and need to jump back, they can't.

South Carolina only gives them the right of way in a crosswalk when they have the light. At all other times the car has the right of way. A pedestrian can be fined for failing to give right of way. Assuming he survives getting run over.
That happens here too... usually two or three sullen inbred dudes, walking pitbulls and with the crotch of their dirty jeans down to their knees. They look right at you as they step out in front. I just stop, I don't even react or engage them in any way.

Dropping the car in neutral, braking with the left foot, and pegging the tach with you right foot while you make a panic face usually wakes them up.
(Just be careful not to screw it up )

agreed, a well tuned (or not so well tuned, depending on the car and the level of prep on the engine) engine makes a VERY effective horn. unless you have a TDI with a manual (TDI Cup Edition TDI Jetta, for instance), that is, those things make barely any noise. bonus points if you have a turbo'd car and can scare the sag out of their pants when you build up nearly full boost and then let off to open up the BOVs
