Turns out it was Rob VanWinkle AKA Vanilla Ice. This was in the early 2000's after his fall from stardom and he was touring with his band in a really old, E36 M3ty van. That's my Chevy van in a parking lot story.

was this before or after his meltdown on MTV?

You mean this Mythbusters?

Mythbusters says it WILL happen

They say it is "partially plausible" to ignite a pool of gasoline with a cigarette.

They do not test confined spaces, drawing on the cigarette, etc.

Plus, they are incorrect in their temperature assessment of the head of the cigarette, by over 600 deg F. They used the Celcius temperature and incorrectly reported it as the Farenheit temperature.

Mythbusters fail.

Sorry, it is not only completely possible to ignite gasoline with a cigarette, it is likely.

I remember many years ago in my fathers repair garage. the derigueur parts cleanr was a pail of gasoline. The fire inspector was complaining about it when one of the mechanics walked over an flipped a lit cigarette into the bucket. the Inspector left, saying "cover it".
