So, got my iPad for Xmas from swmbo (on it now) and now I have no idea what to do with it lol. I don't want to spend cash on apps, so what are my options for fun stuff besides email and the net? Good car stuff? Last time i owned an apple product, it was a Macintosh with a black and white screen...oregon trail ftmfw! I'm not fully clueless, but more or less lost for the time being. Oh help grm community!

At least spend the .99 cents for Angry birds. Then proceed to waste hours.

Nice. There is an Oregon Trail app... +1 on Angry Birds. Facebook app if you do fb. Weather Channel app for forecasts. Netflix app if you have netflix.
Pandora.
definitely pandora.
Did you get the 3G model, or just the wifi?

Umm how would I know?
Also, how can I join iTunes without providing a CC number? Constantly buy gift cards for myself?

A 3G model would've cost a couple hundred more and will allow you to connect without a wi-fi connection (over a cell network instead). It will also require a monthly contract.
As far as I-Tunes, do you have a Paypal account? You can use that instead of a CC. If not then I believe you can just leave the billing section blank and then use the gift cards as you mentioned.
Many of the apps are free and they are much better than the same apps for the iPhone.
For instance the weather app on the iPad has a much bigger interface with much more info. There's a cool stargazer app that lets you tilt the pad up towards the sky and it shows you what stars are up there and their names. You can find all the constellations.
You're acting like you don't realize the iPad is actually a computer. You can dock it to a keyboard and more memory and actually replace your office puter. At TCU they've given them to many of the profs and they no longer have desktop puters.
You'll be able to do all of your word processing, use spread sheets and everything else you do on your computer.
Yeah duh, I'm an idiot, not 3G, it's a wifi model...shoulda been able to tell the difference there. And yeah, it's hard to grasp th fine details between this thing and a full blown pc/Mac, but I'm slowly gaining knowledge.
Speaking of using spreadsheets etc, anyone have experience with th openoffice.org stuff? I've heard it's a reasonable facsimile to excel and word etc. Id be interested in learning how to use that stuff too.
I'm slowly realizing that im just gonna have to suck it up and start a real iTunes account as theres sooo much content for this thing tied up in iTunes (like you have to have a current version of it installed on a pc/mac just to turn an ipad on...infuriating when there's no other machine in the house). I suppose im gonna try to pursue the reloadable gift card method and see where that gets me. I just don't like the idea that my cc is tied to a tool that can charge me whenever it feels like it. Im sure my hesitancy will pass as my savvy increases.

I use OpenOffice on my Windows7 laptop here and haven't found anything it can't do that Word/Excel can, although I'm far from a power user with either program. It's handled all the DOC and DOCX files I've thrown at it. Highly recommended and well worth the price.
I use open office, and it works fine for almost everything. The only time i had to use excel was for a spreadsheet with a visual basic macro embedded in it, open office wouldnt do it.
There's an app to turn it into a customizable remote control for all your A/V stuff. I have to try that one when I get more time.
Get yourself an airport (or other wireless router) and enjoy hours of boot-free, wireless web browsing on/in the couch/toilet/bed. You'd be surprised how handy it can be, especially if you are on your way out the door and need to look something up quick. I bought ours for the wife figuring I'd never use it. Now everyone (including the 4-year-old) can't take our hands off of it.
So I didn't get an iPad,but rather an iPod touch. What do I need to get for it to be the coolest kid in the world??
geared. Make the yellow gear move the blue one by moving the gray ones around. Sounds simple but gets more difficult as you go thru the 150 levels.
PAGES is $10 and is the best $10 you'll ever spend. You don't need Open Office or anything else. Pages does it all cross platforms.
My daughter just brought her new iPad over.
The free apps will just blow you away.
When I first saw the iPad I thought it was the answer to a question that hadn't been asked, but as I've seen them used I realized they are the next computers. Right now they don't come with as much memory as you need to use it as an exclusive computer, but with docking stations it expands it's use tremendously!

text free is a good ap. i have it on mine
I realize we are all busy people but do we not have the little extra time to type or say "application" rather than app?
I have no idea why this bothers me so much and it has now been compounded by applebees advertising their appetizers as apps.

They aren't applications anymore. It is just a part of the modern lexicon. It's an app. you buy it from the app store. and you use it on your app capable phone.
Whoo hoo posting from new iPod touch!!! I still haven't scratched the surface of the stuff available on this thing

Agreed! I can't seem to put my iPad down. I do see though that im gonna have to spend a lot of time adjusting the settings to get this thing to behave the way I want. Like QUIT CORRECTING MY SPELLING! That and not being able to ctrl+c and ctrl+v etc is making me a little crazy. But all in all i love this thing like crazy and the surface of its capabilities has not yet been scratched!
You can turn off the spell correct.

As listed by both of you...resist the scratching as much as possible.
