Sprayed 4-5 days ago. Got tired of cutting and trimming around the backyard yard art XJ.
Sprayed the grass edge of the gravel driveway that keeps pushing in. Sprayed the weeds in the gravel too, they are goners.
May have to spray more later, as regular maintenance.
I think I have a plan here.
It's only been a week, I'm still in the early learning phase but getting dialed in. Some of the 'heartier' weeds may need resprayed but I did cut the Dawn from 1 cup/ two gallon brine to 1/2 cup there. Grass is still no problem tho.
Once this backyard is sufficiently treated there should be no need for the push mower or weed whacker anymore, just a once around w/ the tractor. Early yet but if it needs a reapplication of brine in 3-4 weeks or more that's a helluva lot easier than dragging extra lawn equipment out every week or so.
The HF 2 gallon sprayer is somewhat slow but cheap at $15. I researched better sprayers, even battery powered w/ backpacks but for now the HF unit wins, no problem dragging it around if you got time. I'll spot spray the gravel driveway for weeds every week or so if needed.
Just an update after cutting the yard tonight. Been three weeks since first testing and initial spraying w/ the brine/ Dawn solution. Still no need to respray the grass and weeds although some are starting to come back. Maybe spot spray in a week or two.
Thread pics from PB are goners but I still have 'em, maybe post progress later down the road when I'm situated again.
Anybody try this? Got pics?
Did it in some parts of the driveway as a trial.
Actually used old table salt instead of the water softener salt, and it worked pretty well.
I'll get some pics when that big yellow thing gets back in the sky.
In reply to RevRico: The table salt didn't work for me. I sprayed a batch with softener salt today which also happened to have quarter gallon of bleach from another project. I'll see in a couple days if it does the job.
I've found commonly available Muriatic Acid dumped into the roundup container works very well when dispensed with the battery-powered spray wand.
In reply to Ricky Spanish:
Since I have well water, I'm a little cautious what I throw on the ground.
Cool. It was in the settings of a new site. Prolly good thing I don't operate a nuclear power plant, it would melt down by the time I figgered it out.
Sorry I don't have before pictures. This was a several year old box of clumpy table salt mixed into a gallon of water, did a pretty decent job. I still haven't gotten around to doing the rest with water softener salt, but it will get done at some point. The lawn guys don't mow the middle of the driveway for some reason (i always did) and it's getting pretty tall.
Update: Hadn't kept up w/ the program but the brush and weeds keep a comin'.
Found this old Duplicolor bed coat sprayer in the basement last night.
Tested w/ 100 lb air and water tonight.... bingo! berkeley the HF sprayer. I have 75' of air hose to reach anything out back and most of the front yard. Easy-peasy... why didn't I see that before.
War on weeds is on. I'll have 50 gallons of salt brine on hand any given time. No berkeleying around anymore... goin' medieval on that E36 M3 now, salt the earth if necessary. Brush roots, tree roots... begone.

That's brilliant^.
I like the brine idea and earlier this year, I picked up a free gas powered pressure washer with a good engine and a bad pump. I'm thinking that a $92 replacement pump might turn it into a sacrificial brine sprayer. I have a pretty big area to cover.
Hmm. I have a one of those things you attach to the end of the hose that will mix with the water as it sprays. I wonder if I can just use some salt and dish detergent in there or if it won't mix fast enough.
It won't dissolve enough of the salt. I like to give it atleast overnight to get enough salt into solution. Heat and agitation will speed the process but it won't be fast enough for that kind of sprayer.
My salt water project has made life easier with less weed eating but I do have a few weeds that seem to enjoy the salt water. Anyone else run in to this, if so how did you dispense with the robust weeds?

Shot of the bed coat sprayer at 100 psi. That'll work!
Mixing up another batch of brine tonight, should be close to 50 gal total. Need to get more Dawn. Prolly spray in a few days once any chance of rain is gone.
