Oh boy, I went and did it. I applied for a new job 8hrs away from my current location. They called me back today and left a VM to call them back to set up an interview. What to do now? LOL...

Start looking at finances and quality of life. Hopefully they match up.

Change is good. You wouldn't have applied unless you were ready. I've done it and it worked out extremely well for me. Go for it and best of luck!

I'm waiting to hear about an interview myself. Promotion and no more shift work, but no overtime and only weekends off. Crazy nerves right now.

At this point it's just talking. No need to be nervous. I interviewed for 2 months for my current job.

What to do now? Start shopping for a Prius. You're going to need one with an 8 hour commute.

Charleston isn't a bad place to be. Good luck with the interview.

Charleston is a beautiful town. I wouldn't be upset with going there. Start looking into cost of living and wages there to see if it's a smart move.

Given I live in the middle of nowhere and decent anything is a 1 plus hr drive away, it should be an upgrade. Coal has been killed by the EPA, so the area is dying. It's time to move.

COL, it's about the same when you average it out to here. Some things are more, some things are less. Housing is killer depending on the area. Wages are better even though the Carolinas are known to be less than the norm.

Good luck with the interview. I have a few friends in that area, and they're major complaint is that cool older cars seem to cost twice what they should in a 60 mile radius.

They also did extensive research on flooding before they picked up their house and managed not to get sunk in the most recent round of floods.

I lived there for years in a former life, Charleston is a great place, the traffic can be a bit hectic but if you time your commute and home location right it can be avoided or mitigated. I spent a lot of time on my bike to avoid it. Good luck with the interview.

Housing has been going through the roof around here for 20 years. I bought my first house in Mt. Pleasant for $48K. 30 years later I sold it for $275K. It just hit the market again at $430K, which is just stupid for a 1000 square foot house on a tiny lot. Things are better if you stay out of the Mt. Pleasant, Daniel Island, West Ashley, and downtown areas. I would avoid most of North Charleston. There are some pretty rough areas in it. Goose Creek, Summerville, Ladson, and Moncks Corner are probably your best bets depending on where you are working.

The good news is traffic really isn't too bad 95% of the time, so commutes are pretty reasonable, unless you live in the sticks or south of town. The bad news is, when traffic is bad, it can be very bad. Several times a year my 20-30 minute commute will turn into 2+ hours. From the east, where I live, there are 3 roads that feed the city, if one is shut down, traffic on the rest can come to a standstill. From the north, there are two roads, one closes, and traffic is even worse. From the south, there is basically one and it get bad fairly regularly.

Good luck again with the interview.

Sounds like my commute in the morning to work. If one road is backed up, it leads to log jams on other roads with people trying to bypass. Regardless i'm screwed
