A bit of background: I work at a small hotel in a small town. Front desk/night audit are my primary duties. My concern is that I'm losing touch with what I used to be good at doing, like working on cars and electronics. The best employer I've ever had was a computer shop, but my employment there ended back in 2007.

So, while I'm working this job that I can't stand, I'm looking for something that suits me better. I envy the power plant workers that stay with us. They come in covered in so much crap all over them, but they all seem happy. That's what I'm looking to find - some modicum of happiness in my job.

Jobs are available in the field I am interested in, but would like to take an apprenticeship approach. I feel like I will learn better that way. Does anything in the way of Electronics Engineering or Mechatronics Engineering have an apprenticeship path, or will I be on my own to put my knowledge to use.

Do any of you have suggestions that can help move my career in that direction? I've been away from formal education so long that I'm not sure if I could learn everything in the time it takes to get a BA, if not practicing outside of school.
