Some people need braces and some can get by with other methods. Local dentist said that my brother and I both needed braces. Parents were hesitant because of the expense. When my Uncle (who was a dentist) came east for his once every 3 years Christmas visit he looked at our teeth.
He showed me some exercises to push on my teeth with my tongue for 5 minutes twice a day. Told parents to get braces on my brother ASAP. It worked out just fine in both cases.

I'm of the opinion that most of the time braces exist primarily as a tool to remove your hard earned money from your pocket.
We had the opposite experience. For under $3000 each with reasonable financing, both our daughters have perfect, straight teeth. Zero cavities, even.
Considering that I have a significant overbite and my teeth are crooked enough that my wife makes me bite stuff just to laugh at the results, it was a very worthwhile investment for us.
I don't doubt it, but I still believe that most of the time it's an expensive and unnecessary exercise.
