I'll just drop this right here, and no, the GRM Message Board was not an option, but maybe it should be.

The biggest mistake is assuming any of those 'news' shows are actually news - they are opinion shows with a lot of people yelling at each other. Doesn't matter what network.

LOL. It doesn't surprise me at all the MSNBC and Fox News are at the bottom and NPR is at the top.

Not to mention the fact that some people actually get their 'news' from Comedy Central.

Sad thing is that that 'news' does make you smarter. So a comedy channel informs you better than the joke they call 'news' on Fox.

I swear I get the important stuff here in Off-Topic at least a day before it hits USA Today and the local paper. So yeah, uh, here!

Not surprised, traces you get by various word-of-mouth sources are better than skewed disinformation (or "opinion"/news hybrid) from Fox (or the equally wacky MSNBC on the other side of the spectrum).

I mainly read reuters releases, CNN and BBC. Which are horribly liberal-biased, by Jon Stewart's definition

BBC. NPR, Deutsche Welle, Radio Netherlands, NHK, and ABC (the Australian Broadcasting Company).

I once worked in TV news. All the news kind of went away when the suits said the department had to become a profit center (i.e., bigger ratings). "Network" came true.

I think in most cases the actual News programming are pretty reasonable, but most watch the other 80% of their programming, which is not news, although they tend to imply it is.

Agreed. It all sucks when it turns into shouting matches. I just want to hear straight faced news reporting. Or else I could just come here and read people shouting and arguing.

I realized that the news was BS and gave up on it about 30 years ago, and think I'm much better off for it. With few exceptions, it's all pretty much the same anyway. When I'm working night shift, I think nothing of reading a 2 or 3 week old paper. I tell my coworkers it makes no difference. The news is always the same. Just the names and places change. TV news? I wouldn't watch it if it was the only thing on.

I remember back, oh about, 100 years ago, right after the OJ verdict they surveyed the jury and asked where they got their news. The most common answer was something like Entertainment Tonight.

Yup.

We complain that there's no good sources for news- we want more in depth reporting. More objective sources of information. Then we turn around and support exactly the opposite.

Every focus group I've ever been involved in describes to a T "The News Hour", but I've never seen it make a blip in the ratings.

"What if we did 24 hours a day of 'Inside Edition' but put a more legitimate edge on it- you know present it like real news. We could even get the same guy to host it".
