maybe it is because of the area I live in.. but even neighborhoods without HOAs do not have that kind of eyesore.

Ok. First, to be clear, I think this guy should be allowed to fly the American flag. MOH recipient or not, if you want to fly old Glory, nothing should stop you. BUT, to me, not checking with the HOA before you move in (and according to the article, he moved in in June) is the same as those people that move next to a racetrack and then bitch about the noise. I don't agree with the rule, but that's where he moved.

Didn't she read the paperwork she signed or go to the meetings? If you don't go to the meetings or read the crap they send you, you deserve weird rules.

People who don't take care of their property will always be a problem no matter where you go. Just a fact of life. So I can understand the rationale behind an HOA, I just don't understand the Nazism with which some people approach their duties as a board member. I can bore you with the story of the mother in law's 'full view storm door' thing a while back, or maybe the 'pickup truck in the driveway' tale of a few years ago (that guy replaced the 'pickup' with an El Camino and really befuzzled the HOA!) but it comes down to when the bear craps in the buckwheat I'm not going to live under such a regime. Those who want to can go right ahead and congratulate each other for keeping out the riffraff such as me.

No way will I ever live in a neighborhood with a HOA. I'd rather deals with boats in the front yard than being sued for driving a pickup truck, or even worse having my house taken from me by the HOA because I can't pay the dues.

HOAs exist because people don't talk to each other anymore. If people came out of their little fiefdoms and actually MET their neighbors, got to know them, and maybe, just MAYBE became a community you wouldn't need a legal pit bull association to make people mow their grass. I don't even live in a neighborhood, I live on a street in the ghetto. But I know my neighbors and welcome everyone on the street when they move in. We talk about problems and work for a solution. HOAs are a sad excuse for a real community.

The sub divison we live in has a HOA and there are a couple of things that I don't like, I am not allowed to put kup a shed in the back yard which really cuts into my garage space, but for the most part its not bad. Case in point,I have had my Alfa sitting on my driveway for a couple of years and have not heard anything about it and our dues are only $60 a year.

I like HOAs. The ones with hardliners running them are the best kind. They are great for the look of the neighborhood. Sure they annoy me. Sure I complain when I get a notice that my mulch isn't thick enough. But my neighborhood looks great.

^^ Gawd that whole thing was hilarious! What finally happened? Did he ever give the boots back?

The funniest picture from that was the 'booted' pool company truck with one tire touching a white line.

I'm not a big fan of HOAs, particularly overly-aggressive and snoopy ones, and all for supporting the right of a Medal of Honor recipient vet to fly the flag. But, he moved into an HOA neighborhood, asked permission to put up the pole and after they said no he did it anyway. I've got to side with the HOA here, even if they were more than a bit too heavy-handed in seeking to enforce their rules. If you don't want to be bound by HOA rules don't live in an HOA community - if you choose to live in one, you should play by the rules.

His neighbors for sure. Plus, his Nascar mates gave him the moniker of "Swervin' Irvan"; that doesn't come across as a compliment.

"Swervin' Irvan" was a well deserved nickname when he started out , but I'll give credit where credit is due, he pretty well outgrew that name by the time he retired...

You have to be a special kind of pompous arse to think you are going to beat a 90yr old decorated WWII hero in a court battle over a flag. That is up there with advocating the repeal of suffrage at a women's lib conference as far as winnable arguments go.

Our HOA wrote me a letter saying that my box-flared, yellow Fiat 128 parked in my driveway was an eyesore to other residents and had a pedition to make me remove it from my driveway. So i sold it to my buddy, and 6 years later, i have the opportunity to buy it back. The only thing is, i cant bring it back to my neighborhood. Nazis.

My parents moved the family to the county when I was ~11 years old. Best thing ever. No neighbors to complain, lots of space, etc...

My senior year of HS the 'neighbor' sold the property bordering ours (sore point, since he had refused for years to sell it to my parents) to a development company. They built 3 houses, 2 on the edge of legal distance to the property line, which effectively eliminated deer hunting in our yard. THOSE houses had an HOA, with noise restrictions. A problem for a guy like me, the air compressor, the cars, other loud toys. So...after they complained one day, I popped the muffler off our Polaris 400 Sport, and ran it up and down the property line until late at night.

They stopped complaining, and promptly moved out.

I had no choice but to move into an HOA hood when we got back here. We have to sell this house in 5 years. My last 'hood had no HOA and the foreclosed home really turned into a nightmare. My Dad is president of his HOA and they can and do make banks pay for up keep on that stuff.

But being a gearhead, an intrusive HOA scared me, so I am now the VP of mine, along with the local PD Sgt who has a 68 Mustang.

Its not the organization, its the peaple who run them.

I generally despise HOAs, but technically this was not his property, it's a townhouse and the grounds are community owned. I personally wouldn't have had a problem with what he was doing but it's not quite a case of some busybodies bossing him around on his own land. In that sort of development, I can totally understand why owners would be discouraged from making any alterations to the landscaping.
