The neighbor across the street just called to say that she is missing three bird feeders. They were replaced by a big pile of bear poop.
I can see it from my bedroom.

Used to have a momma and three Cubs that would come through my grandparents yard every afternoon. Secure your garbage and don't feel them and don't sweat it.

I think not feeling bears is some of the best wildlife advice I've ever read.
Bears in the northeast generally aren't something we have to worry about. Unless you get between a momma and her cubs. Then you need to worry. But I have encountered a momma and cubs in the wild and lived to tell about it. For the most part, Northeastern black bears really don't want anything to do with humans.

Except to eat the human's garbage and bird feed.
We had a bear that killed a horse across town a couple of years ago. Not feeling great about taking the dog out tonight.

The bear or the poop?

Do they really use Charmin?
My mom called once to let me know there were five bears in the yard eating apples. She still went out to do some gardening but she kept an eye on them.

I'd be scared too. Pretty sure the dog can out run you.

Not currently...
Haven't seen our bears lately but basically any walk through the woods out back will answer the age old question.
Yes, yes they do...
We get brown and black bears almost weekly in our yard April-November. They are acutely aware of human movement. They know Tuesdays are trash days and you better have a bear proof trash can and they know when things aren't quite right in the human world and they are mostly inside for a while. They take advantage and are opportunistic. Lots of respect for them and when they're active, don't let rover outside with no leash.
