I saw a few posts here about veg oil. And that's what I want to do. Plan is to get a diesel step van like this and convert it to veg oil.

Some questions:

  • Can you run a single tank conversion?
  • What's the easiest and cheapest way to convert and run on veg oil?
  • Could I put a 55 gallon tank or smaller in the front passenger side of the van and connect it to the engine?
  • COuld I put a tank in the back cargo area of the van?
  • Would a settling tank in the back work well considering I'd be driving?
  • How many tanks should I have?

Okay so I understand the basic problems in that the oil is thicker than the diesel so it has to be heated, filtered and you don't want water in it.  I plan on doing some traveling in the step van and living in it for a period. Figured I'd be traveling solo mostly so why not use the passenger side for a tank since it would be warmer and same with the back.

I've seen a bus conversion here where the guy had 3 55 gallon tanks underneath and that looked pretty cool, but way over my head.

Now I don't know much about cars and stuff so I bet it will be a learning curve. Excuse my ignorance.

So I've read about pipes, pumps, filters and heaters, but it sounds so daunting to do and I don't have a few grand or even one at the moment considering I have to buy a van still. So I am wondering if there is an easier way or cheaper way?

I know most people recommend a double tank but that just seems hella confusing. I suppose if all the steps are laid out and broken down then maybe I could do it, but then every engine is different and I don't see any info out there about step van diesel conversion.

Seems like if I am pouring warm and clean oil into the tank then it would be okay? Or would it considering some might still be in the lines when the engine cools down? Maybe not.

Plan on being in the mountains this winter with it will be driving across country though before that. So I'll be in chilly places but plan on settling in one location mostly for the winter so I probably won't be driving around so much.

Any tips will be appreciated.

I've seen a few veggie-oil conversions done on VW TDI's when I was more active on those forums (I've had a '03 TDI since new).

In general a two-tank system is the way to go.  There is a heating coil tapped off the engine coolant inside the veggie oil tank and you start the engine on diesel before switching over after the engine warms up and gets the VO up to temp.  If the VO isn't hot enough it'll be too thick to be effectively pumped through the injection system.  You also need to stop the engine on diesel to purge the VO out of the HP pump and injectors or it can REALLY gum things up.

I did know a guy who used to just pour VO into the main tank of his Sprinter mixed with diesel, but IMHO that sounds very risky.  Sprinter injection system parts are expensive...  hell... diesel injection system parts are expensive in general, so it pays to be careful or any savings you might get in fuel can go away real quick.

You might be able to go one-tank if you process the VO a bit first, running it through a centrifuge set-up to get some of the heavier/thicker elements out of the oil.  I seem to remember one of the GRM members doing this, but it was years ago now and I don't recall the specifics.  Hopefuly he'll see this an chime in.
