You waited to long.

Realistically, the one good thing about the stupid high 911 prices is that if you can afford one, you should be able to own it for a number of years, drive it, and sell it for little or no loss, or maybe even a gain.

Same dude. A guy had a 74 targa in brown just going to E36 M3 and I could have had it for a song. Like ten years ago. This was always a car I wanted and now I don't see it happening.

And that sentiment is driving the values...

Yup. Even though we don't go anywhere anymore, still been getting it out of the garage more than usual lately.

Let's start a GoFundMe to hire a lobbyist to grease some politician to allow the production / registration of 10,000 brand new air cooled era 911's.

The original metal dies probably still exist, CNC machines could do much of the rest.  Let's say 30K'ish for the most desirable car ever made in my mind and obviously in the minds of many others.

The only thing standing in the way is the law and laws are bought and sold on a daily basis so...

Something like this "project" 911 SC has some real appeal, at $30k;
https://www.hemmings.com/classifieds/dealer/porsche/911sc/2466004.html

It's really hard to say what this car really needs in the drivetrain department to go from having a "free turning engine" to a running driving normal-ish car.  But this isn't exactly unobtanium money.  This kind of cash also seems to get sorta decent SC Targa's.

For a home hobbyist this doesn't seem that bad to me?  It's not the $10k that a "project" SC would have gone for 15 or 20 years ago, but...  What am I missing here as an outsider looking in?

Kit car is probably the answer here.  Don't sell it assembled, or have low volume.  Or both.

Dynacorn style 911?  Why not?

Oops, have to enclose picture to test new features.  NMNA

Back in 2005 I could've bought any number of 911 SC's for under $10k.  Same with E30 M3's.  Oh well.  I bought my 996 Turbo ~2 years ago because I thought if I didn't buy one then I wouldn't be able to afford one later.

Turns out I was right.  While they haven't rocketed up like the air cooleds, I'm seeing cars with 2-3X the mileage as mine having asking prices of more than I paid...

I had a chance to buy one a million years ago--356c with a Super 90 engine. Asking price was like maybe $14k. This was 25 years ago.

I try not to think of things I should have done. I bought a Tacoma a few years back instead of a perfect $16k E30 M3.

Right now I am trying to decide if I should buy a $5k 944 as a donor for my Opel project and just drive it around until the Opel's chassis and motor are built. The stuff on the 944 I need have been completely refreshed and it would be a great car to take to the track for PCA DEs for my wife to chase me in the Cayman.

I'm glad I'm not interested in them because I'll never have the cash to buy one now.  I do, however,  lust over 2nd gen Chargers, so I've got that going for me.
