I knew copper theft was getting worse but this is impressive. Trains weren't running this morning because someone stole the wires.

I wonder if they manged to cut it live without dying, or tripped some fuse first.

They are very lucky. I'd say of the top of my head they used those big cable cutters (look like bolt cutters but with different jaws) and a twitch one way or the other would have cooked them.
Down here, they've been known to break into the power company storage yards going after cable. One contractor lost $50,000 worth of cable one night. http://www.wtoc.com/story/14297802/alleged-burglars-dug-holes-under-electric-fence-to-steal-50k-in-copper-wire
They came up to our local track last winter and dismantled the entire electrical system. But on a happier note hydro went to investigate a power outage a while back and they found the crispy remains of someone who had tried to use bolt cutters on a 66 kv main. Natural selection at its finest.

I have seen pictures of a guy that was stealing copper and made contact with a 44kv main bus. Some things cannot be unseen. It was really disturbing.

I have a hunch you only saw pictures of part of the guy...

I think I saw the same pics, a guy was on the transformer on the pole. Yeah he was pretty well cooked.

Interesting. I figured all that current would have vaporized the water content of his body quickly enough to cause at least a localized explosion?
