A GY6 weighs 60 lbs with the CVT. I wonder if it can operate without the CVT or if the case has integral parts.
Hopped up GY6 is 12-14hp, which could put 10 to the water through a jet. Also, air cooled.
But is that any better than just dropping a 9.9 or 15 on it which weighs 75 lbs? Plus, an outboard is easily removable for loading/unloading the boat in the van.
I'm just leaning so hard toward jet because of shallow water. I've been on the river here with a "pitchfork" outboard. The problem is that you're usually fine if you hit the pitchfork. It's the repeated whacking on the lower unit that eventually rips a hole in it or just breaks it off.
Now I'm going down the rabbit hole of lightweight engines that make good power and found DLE-222 222cc 4-Cyl Gas Engine with Electronic Ignition and Mufflers [DLE-222] | Airplanes - RC Planet
A 222cc 4-cyl two stroke that makes 22 hp and weighs 12 lbs. Just a shame that it's $2000.

And to Curtis:
Cool toy!
I doubt shipping is worth it, but I'd be right interested in that 3.5. Or any smaller outboard. The 15-18 is gettin' a bit large, but wouldn't turn one down!
As said, do the jet drive! A outboard jet drive ain't as cool, but I think would be perfect. That 2 stroke would be fantastic, but that's a steep entry fee.
To both of y'all, I need a smoking' deal on a trolling motor, as well! This area is not the place for cheap boat stuff.

That makes me all tingly inside.

You coming to the challenge? Or know someone who can relay? Make me an offer I can't refuse. NADA says $500 but I wouldn't do that to you.
Sooo.... anyone have a cheap/free jet ski? I can't imagine wanting the weight of anything over 500cc but would entertain a 250 or 300 as well.

Do you happen to remember a guess on what your jet drive weighed with the motor?

Now cheap (non running) 'skis do seem to be available here, if they do not show up around there. I forgot the challenge was coming up soon. Doubt I'll make it this year either... same spectator problem... but ain't far off the trail!
In reply to Mr_Asa :
That works with an outboard, not with a jetski swap...

Brother in law has two or three. I can check price and displacement.

The drive weighs less than 30 pounds. The engine is 70-80 at a guess but I didn't weigh it while I had it out. I would figure 100-130 pounds, all in including the bottom of the hull the engine and drive are mounted to.
Good to know a ballpark, thank you. That's heavier than I was hoping. The 3.5hp I got probably weighs 30 lbs. A 6-8 hp old school OMC is about 50-60 lbs, and a 9.9/15 is about 75 lbs. Outboards are boring, but popular for a reason.

Just a "hold my beer" thought:
How about making it an airboat?
A rotax 377cc fan is about 80 lbs and puts out 35hp, since it's not an aircraft you could even go to a 440cc or 503cc. You might find some bargains this time of year.

In reply to Curtis73 (Forum Supporter) :
Then you can also use the air boat in front of the garage with either smoke or mist as a wind tunnel for challenge aero development.
In reply to captdownshift (Forum Supporter) :
Just borrow a fog machine from the theater.
Fans are silly.
If you're not going with an obnoxious two stoke the next logical step is to go with a pulse rocket engine.
Polite correction... Fans are inefficient, but just the kind of overkill and excess, which sounds like my kind of fun.
I don't think I would do it. Hard to fit a 6' tall fan cage in a van, but it's like putting a lumpy-cammed big block V8 in a Nash Metro. Which, by the way, I also approve of.
Rocket engines have that pesky problem of not being able to be shut off. A turbine, on the other hand....

How are we not best friends?
We are, we've just never actually met face to face.

I think yer kitty might be a touch asthmatic. Tohatsu 3.5?
That’s all you need for a small boat like that but thanks for all the tangents.

Polite, polite correction..."solid" rocket can't be shut off, a "liquid" rocket such as this hydrogen peroxide rocket can be throttled.
Let me save you the trouble of looking it up...you get about 120 pound seconds of thrust per pound of propellant.
Added later...
Just looked it up, static thrust for a boat propeller is about 19 Lbs per Hp. so you'd be burning about 1.58 Lbs. per second to equal the thrust of a 10 Hp outboard

The kitty is a 4-stroke single cylinder. It will always sound asthmatic.
It's a Mercury, so effectively yes... Tohatsu
