We have a new motto for the 2009 BABE Rally. To hell with gas prices, go in style =)

I went overboard with our buildup of the 63 Studebaker and started making a little street rod project out of it (383 stroker V8)

I decided it was just not in the spirit of the event and I didnt want to risk blowing it up on the trip.

So I've casually been looking at some things in the target range. I really wanted an old caddy but noone was selling cheap. Also since Im so wrapped up in the Stude I wanted to find something that was running and driving so I didnt have to spend too much time with it.

So tonite I went to follow a lead and take a chance. 1969 Cadillac Sedan Deville. Runs and drives. Asking $1200 offered the BABE specified $500 Ok, yeah, I figgured it wasnt gonna happen, and although its a bit ugly it was solid enough I felt guilty about even making a $500 offer. But dangit, the guy took the offer =)

That should have the 472, I think. You'll get about 6MPG around town if you keep your foot out of it, maybe 10 on the highway if it is tuned up. At 55 downhill with the wind behind you, 14. Nice oil leak too. Cost you a bill to fill the tank. But it's interesting and should be a smooth ride.

Can we see pictures of it parked next to the Smart?

Both length and width?

Yep, 472, mostly highway on the rally but we're guessing and budgeting at around 8mpg.

3 way split on the gas this year and one of them is a Brit who thinks our gas is cheap so we'll see how he feels by the end of the week :)

Oh, and that's actually the power steering cooler leaking :)

I won't have it home till the weekend but yes, Smart comparo pictures are definitely in order.

Hmmm....get a hoist and put it in the trunk.

A couple of these (or similar) in the trunk. Then you could think of mpg as an average, sort of like CAFE.

That car weighs over 5,000 lbs. You could probably get your five bills back at the scrap yard.

Or... LOCOST!!

I saw this thread title and thought you guys were psychic... just went for a ride in an Amphicar this morning!

What a weird feeling: It looks like a LBC, smells like a LBC, but when you put your hand out the side, there's water! I laughed the whole time.

What's even weirder is when you drive out of the water. That's almost as funny, thanks to your senses somehow getting reversed during the "sailing" part of the experience. It's a feeling of, "Hey, look, I'm in this CAR, and it's on LAND--hilarious!"

Story to come in Classic soon.

I suddently have the urge to build a homebrew amphibious streetcar! (especially given this weather we've been having lately!)

This thing would be scary on a track, any driver input is taken as merely a suggestion by the vehicle.

That's a nice hybrid... It takes gas, and more gas.

Somehow sailing seems more appropriate than driving. Good thing my co-driver knows how to sail :)

Jibe HO!

You think you can get a good tack on the interstate?

Oh! You need to put a red bouy and a green bouy on each side of your driveway or wherever this gets parked. Obscure...yes, but for those who get it, it'll be a riot. Channel markers FTW!

Just make sure you put the red bouy on the right side of the driveway as you face the garage. Otherwise, you might end up with the thing in your living room.
