Childhood can be unsafe?! who knew!! When I was groing up, my dad's work shop was full of air conditioners and heavy tools sitting on the edge of shakey shelves and wheeled carts. Ya know what I learned? Be really careful walking through a shop. I found a whole slug of thouroughly worn out AFX slot cars once, too. there was a lot of track, about 30 little cars, (2 of which worked) and the power dealy for a train set (for more power and speed. hence why the cars were burned out). I learned 3 things there- How slot cars work, how electric motors work, and electricity really hurts, be careful. If kids don't take risks, they don't learn to be careful of risk, and how to calculate risk/reward. Without that they calculate time spent attempting to do something vs. time spend doing nothing useful, no risk assesment, which could come back to bite them. Granted, a little adult supervision might have been nice when my 8 year old self was fiddling with electricity, but in the end I learned the satisfaction of figuring something out and fixing it myself. Also, electricity hurts.

And to Margie: I've always noticed that a PITA kid can be, uh, 'helped' by being around good kids through, uh, 'good influence.' Yeah, I'll go with that.

We peeked around the corner to check up on them, and found e36m3head on the ground, inside a circle of cousins, all of whom had cattails in their hands and poised, while the eldest cousin (then about 8), asked, "Are you gonna do it again?" We heard "noooo," decided the situation was on the way to resolving itself, and retreated.

Was this the side of the house where the patio later was constructed? Just sayin'...

That first article is nuts. I never saw anyone get more than a grass-stain playing those games. I shot bb guns unsupervised, I sat in radio flyer wagons racing down wayyy to steep of a hill, and I stayed out in the snow until my feet turned blueish-green. I played hard as a kid and I got hurt sometimes. It was part of a learning curve that I am grateful for as an adult. I was more careful the next time. Its strange to see some of the guys I was friends with growing up. They are all a bunch of bob costas's. The same guys that shot red-ryders at each other now wont let their sons play with legos, because they might choke. I dont have kids (yet) but this stuff seems to go too far sometimes. I fear for the future if we have a bunch of whiney, lazy nancy-boys running around afraid to get dirty.

Now I can tumble off my soapbox and get off this old guys lawn...

I learned that one on my own! He wouldn't stand a chance in that competition. Although I've heard tales that he could throw down back in the day (before I was born), he hasn't been much of a drinker for the last 30 or 40 years.

Heh, my dad would still drink me under the table. Then again, he's a good ol' boy, and I've seen him dominate a case of High Life (Bottles no less) and then start workin' on the backyard hooch. That E36 M3 was like drinkin' c16.... but it was surprisingly good.

A lot of stuff like this gets posted to this board. Harebrained ideas, frivolous lawsuits, etc. People get all hot and bothered about how this lawsuit or that harebrained idea is proof of the apocalypse or how one political party or another is ruining the country.

Most of the time, the lawsuits get thrown out of court at the lowest levels (if they even get that far) or folks take a step back from the brink of harebrained ideas and come to their senses.

We hear about these things because they're good copy. Somebody entices you to read a story by inflaming a situation that, if left alone, would die a natural death in about thirty seconds. Then we all discuss it for three pages or until the thread gets locked, whichever comes first.

More people see the article than would normally, thereby increasing page views and ad revenues. These stories are proven page-view pumper-uppers. The other successful format is a list like "25 Ways to Lose 25 Pounds in 25 Seconds" or "10 Worst Celebrity Butts."

I guarantee you that, come June, kids will be out screaming around on their bikes, playing ball, building go-karts, tramping through the woods, swimming in ponds and all the stuff we did when we were kids. Yeah, there are some annoying parents and yeah, they spend too much time in front of a video screen. When they get bored of that, they'll do something else. The "something else" will be just as stupid and dangerous as the stuff we did. No more, no less.

All good points, Jerry.

But, I can't help thinking that media exposure to hare-brained, proposed legislation is a great way to keep our elected morons in check.

Yeah, maybe. However, these used to be local concerns. You and I knowing about this doesn't change the vote or a judge's decision in this jurisdiction. Somebody's selling stuff and our involvement is part of selling more stuff.

So I'm guessing making hand-held tennis ball mortars out of steel cans, duct tape, and lighter fluid would be out too? Man, kids can't have any fun now-a-days.

Life is dangerous. The sooner kids learn that, the less likely they will die from being overprotected and ignorant.
