Learn me: Shaving my head with a razor. The idea of it freaks me out, and it seems like a big PITA from a maintenance standpoint. Right now I do clippers with no guard once every three or four weeks.

I saw poopshovel and "speaking of shaving." I thought this was going a different direction if you know what I mean.
I shaved my dome for a few years before I used a safety razor. I was using those multi-blade deals. It was incredibly easy since the hair up there is finer (and sparser) than the hair on my face. I would go really quickly over it in any direction. Never knicked myself once. I'd do it every 3-4 days IIRC.

Shower, handful of shaving creme, cover your dome, and go to town. I do it once a week. Any longer than that and the shadows starts to reveal that it's not just a shaved head, I'm just a bald berkeley. Have to get up early on those days as the shower is 10 minutes longer. I do two passes, one with and one against the grain. I use a shaving mirror, but that's good for maybe 25%. Most of it is by feel. If you feel a rough spot, take another pass. I've been doing it for 12 years, and have only cut myself once. I think I use a Mach3.
I'm not quite ready to go that route yet. Maybe I'm just trying to hold onto my youth. Back in my teen years, we're talking 1980's here, I rocked the mullett. Well, almost. The hair on top wasn't spiked up. When wet, my hair was almost to my mid-back. It was so thick, they used to charge extra at the barber shop. I didn't cut it short until '96 or '97.
Now, a wife and 3 kids later, I'm showing the classic male pattern baldness. Just thin wisps left up top, but the sides are still there (turning grey). But I can't bring myself to cut it all off. I just keep it cut short. Either that, or I'll grow it out and dress up as Bozo the Clown.
Then again, I have a thing for long hair. I made my wife grow her hair out long before I agreed to have kids.
Shaved heads have become so mainstream these days that I expect hipsters will rediscover the combover soon, just to be different.
I'm waiting for the day ex-young guys who have been bald their whole lives decide having hair would be cool...Regrets...
Unless you're losing your hair in clumps that look like electrode damage, I don't see the point in the dome shave. I keep my hair short - like a #3 or so and I like it that way. I have the friar tuck patch and I'm thinning at the top more and more. Who cares? Everyone knows what the shaved dome is all about. You're not fooling anyone.
Lose the goatee too while you're at it.

1-2-3 passes...nope, not a clue what that means
I'm not trying to 'fool' anyone. I'm also not trying to look like a berkeleying scumbag. I don't know about you, but I like getting a little leg now and then. The "friar tuck" look isn't really condusive to that, in case you haven't noticed - I'm guessing if you asked the good friar, he'd say: "hence the robes and the celibacy, and the touching of the little boys and all that."
Oh, and thanks, Dave. Should've just given you a call.

I forgot - Uncle Fester got all the Bob Costas.

More than George Castanza, I'm guessing.
