Would it be ok to have a 2" rear and a 1.6-1.8" front? Trying to turn a 700cc crosstrainer into a 29er but the front fork cross-over will only allow about 1.6-1.8"". I have been riding a difficult trail for 2 years with this bike on 1 3/8" road tires.

Sure, you can go as wide as you like as long as it doesn't rub the frame. The spot that usually offers a spot of trouble is the chainstays behind the bottom bracket. Wheels flex under pedalling forces, especially when climbing while standing, so if you have a very tight fit you may hear it rub.
