I'm pretty sure there was a thread on the old BBS, but I couldn't find it... please recommend some decent "GRM-ish" motorcycle magazines. Most of what was on the newstand last night was a bit too "Car and Driver-ish", which is fine if you want reviews of the latest crotch rocket or uber-cruiser. And then there are the V-twin magazines that are heavy on the chrome and boobies, and very light on content. Anything from budget V-twin stuff to vintage cafe projects is fine.

I like The Horse magazine for that kind of stuff. Flip past the chopper hags and it's got some good project stuff going on from japanese to british to the usual HD stuff.

A few years ago I think a guy won a chopper build off contest with a rat bike Honda Magna from the early 80's. Not much more grassroots than that.

You won't find exactly what you're looking for, but there are a couple of british mags out there and a couple of "Classic Motorcycle" type magazines that sometimes have projects in them.

The Horse looks pretty cool. I'm not much of a chopper guy, but it looks like they have some pretty neat projects. I'll probably check it out.

Any names? Didn't see anything like them at the local B&N, so I'll have to find proper newstand again (the local magazine shop just went under), or ask the publisher for a sample issue.

I really can't remember. It was that long ago. The bike was nothing pretty. I do remember it was some guy dressed up like a viking and blowing into a ram's horn standing on the bike. That image was, for some reason , striking.

Let's go with this for starters:

http://www.classicmechanics.com/

http://www.motorcyclistonline.com/index.html <--- Motorcyclist is coming out with a new bi-monthly called, aptly, Motorcyclist Classics.

I have a subscription to: http://www.motorcycleclassics.com/ Which is pretty sweet I must say.

There is also: http://www.classicmotorcycle.co.uk/ (another british mag)

That's all I can dig out at the moment. I know that you can get Motorcycle Classics at Borders, which is where I got it before I subscribed.

Motorcycle Classics is published in the US and is a very good magazine. They concentrate on 'modern' classics from the 1960s through 1980s, although they do feature older bikes as well. Cycle World is the other bike magazine I subscribe to; they mainly do reviews of new bikes but most issues also have a feature or two on home built or custom bikes of some sort. They also have Peter Egan on staff, which is a good thing.

Another pretty good online source is http://www.motorbyte.com/ the website of Minnesota Motorcycle Monthly.

I only got to read a little bit of that, but it's pretty sweet! Project Turd was a cool little article.

Just a heads up, there's a little bit of classic bike stuff in the next issue of Classic Motorsports.
