Has anyone heard any dirt on these guys?
In my business we simply don't have the need to accept many credit cards so it's too costly to set up a traditional account, but there are times it would save us some time and travel.

Many small businesses use it here, and I really like using it. The only "complaint" is that the credit card reader is a little small. But they all report that the fees are very reasonable.
There's none of the paypal nonsense of raiding your bank account or other weirdness?
They talked about paying with Square which made me wonder if you had to use your money up that way.
My wife has been using it for her business (hair stylist) for 7-8 months now and I can't remember her complaining about it.
She plugs the card reader into her tablet and you "sign" electronically on the touchpad........pretty cool.

For the payee? No, I use a credit card.
I don't know any of the owners fees, but as z31 said- no complaints, and they all seem to think the fees are very reasonable. Again, the only "complaint" was about the plug in hardware- we'll have to go to the other place that uses the same technology, but more robust hardware, to find out who it is.
We've used it in our business. We're seasonal, and have only had two sales so far. While open, we avg. several dozen transactions daily. No complaints so far, from us or the customers.
I would have an extra one or two on had, if you will be using them alot( cheap out of pocket at Best Buy or your local apple store, and they end up being free w/ the rebate from square), and obviously keep them out of the elements and dusty environments. We had two that died quickly and unexpectedly last season, but we were inside of an unheated building for several hours at a time in 40-50degree weather for two-three days straight.
My understanding is that the current Square reader does not encrypt the card data before sending to the phone. Also, Square doesn't present many of the card acceptance gotchas, so be sure to read all of the terms and conditions. For example, rooted and jailbroken devices are forbidden by Square.
Heyyyy I really like that! I'll have to add that to ideas for my business.
Ironically, as I was posting this a commercial for Square came on the television. WEIRD!
