8 sucked in many ways. Darth Emo sucks. Rey is wonderful. The reformed storm trooper is good. The hot shot pilot has been terribly wasted.
I didn't go to Solo in the theater because of 8. Watched it on Netflix this weekend, and was pretty darn happy with it.
I intend to see it in the theater and if 9 isn't chock full of stupidity, I will be happy, but its time to let Star Wars have a nap, I think.

I avoid leaks and spoilers. All of the movies have flaws, that is not the point. I'm not worried about fine details that I'd never notice in the theater or breaks from traditionally accepted truths about the SW universe. It'll be fun and if it doesn't live up to ESB, still fun.

Have you seen the other trailers?!? The cast's reactions and comments? Doomcocks's leaks?
Star Wars is great. I have Disney+ just for the Mandalorian. I've been to the midnight showing on opening night for 1, 2, 3, 7, R1, 8, and Solo.
7 was fun when it came but had aged badly. Rogue 1 may be one of the best Star Wars films. 8 was one of the worst stories and shot films ever, seriously have you seen the throne room fight?!? The guards just spin in circles because the characters timing is so off and it's filmed in front of red curtain. I still went to go see Solo after that, and it wasn't bad. (Wasn't great either).
But this, this is a whole new line of train wreck. Starting with, why isn't the Death Star wreckage on Endor...
There was more than one Death Star, but lets not get hung up on facts about a Sci-Fi Movie series spread over decades and now multiple owners.

F&F made a 9? Or is the H&S spinoff?
9 is coming this year. Like it or not.

8 was beyond minor flaws or details that wouldn't be noticed in the moment. I went with 5 good buddy's (who also went to opening night of 7 and R1 with me) and all of us were literally groaning that entire movie, and we walked in at "peak fandom" thanks to all the love for R1, Rebels, and the X-Wing Miniatures Game. Your mama jokes, running out of gas, space Poppins, spinning guards, no cut swipes, green milk, the entire Canto Bight storyline, the fact that the MAIN STORY was "they can track us through hyperspace, that's never been done!" and the sidestory is literally "Take this tracker, you can find us even through hyperspace!". Even if you had never, ever seen any Star Wars before, that movie was hot trash.
The flaws in just the TV spots for 9 make me think that 8 will look like a decent movie in comparison.

Disagree, and I think Manaolrian proves that. It's tme to let terrible writers, directors, and producers have a break. Maybe come up with a cohesive story for the trilogy before you shoot the first one? Or not have your president fire every single director? Hire directors with more than 1 movie under their belt?
I dunno, man. You have some pretty strong opinions about a movie that nobody has seen. I'll admit I haven't chased down all the info that's out there, but that's on purpose. I'm going in with high hopes.

Ok, I'll give you that. How about, It's time for the long, drawn out political drama to be given the big dirt nap, stop building gargantuan death stars, quit killing everyone, and have some more stories like Mandalorian and Solo?

Everybody I knew of said solo was a disgrace and it was horrible and all that. I really enjoyed it. I’ll hold on making an opinion until I’ve seen it. I don’t want to sound preachy, but I think everyone else here would be wise to do the same. Talk about your hopes and concerns, but to write it off before it’s even released seems like writing off the Miata before driving it because it is low hp, or the Mustang because it has a live axle.
I really enjoyed the Last Jedi. It had terrible flaws, but so does every single Star Wars movie. It also had mind blowing moments, which not every Star Wars movie has.
I also enjoyed Solo.
Maybe "peak fandom" is the problem, expectations are too high. It was still way better than the latest Star Trek movies. (Seriously, Kirk on a dirt bike WTF.)

I loved Rogue 1. Maybe tied for 2nd with Empire. I really didn't like Solo much, but it wasn't bad per se.
I thought Ep7 was... just OK. And Ep8 was awful.
I'll go see Ep9 during the holiday break, because that's what you do. But I am not overly hopeful.
I will argue with you to my dying breath that Last Jedi—despite some structural and narrative flaws—was a truly exceptional Star Wars film and got me more excited about the franchise than Force Awakens did.
I'm excited for Ep 9 and I'll be there opening night as usual, but I'm also a little worried that a lot of it will be retconning Ep 8 which doesn't need to be retconned because it was awesome.
Still, it's Star Wars, and that's better than no Star Wars.

A lot, and I'll add to this later when I have a little more time, but one thread stands out.
I love the idea that Rey was "nobody." That Snoke was "nobody." That some random kids working as indentured servants in a stable on some random planet could be sensitive to The Force. I love that Luke was less messiah and more "guy that got in way, way over his head." That the entire fate of the entire galaxy wasn't bound to the destiny of a single dysfunctional family who couldn't really keep their E36 M3 together.
That thread made the entire universe seem way more realistic and less fatalistic to me.
In reply to JG Pasterjak :
While I don't share all of your opinions on the subject, I really enjoyed reading your reasoning. thanks for sharing.
I will fully admit I didn't enjoy TLJ as much as I had hoped I would. Then I read that everyone else was a bit disappointed too and why. And I thought all the reasoning was sound, but I was still an apologist. Only after I watched it again about a year later did I enjoy it for what it is. I think the mouse could have picked a better director for sure but I spent my money on the dvd in the end anyway.
When I was a kid I saw Star Wars when Lucas remastered and rereleased the original trilogy. Immediately hooked for life. I won't tell you how much time I spent when I was ten reciting Yoda's training speech or meditating and trying to move things with my mind. I wish I was ten again. Anyway. I'm beyond excited for whatever 9 brings.
and for the record, Solo>R1. Fight me.
In reply to JG Pasterjak :
I agree with all of those story parts. I just wish the rest of it to tie it together was better. That's one of the reasons I think 9 is going to be bad is the SPOILER ALERT
retconning of Rey being a nobody
I grew up on Star Wars, read every book etc. TLJ was a bit of a disappointment for me, but it was still Star Wars and that's my religion, I rewatch it once a month.
I wish they'd gone with the original planned episodes 7, 8 and 9, in movie form, which I believe was meant to be the Thrawn trilogy in book canon. But I understand Disney needed a story that hadn't been told yet. I know the argument that episodes 7 & 8 are a rehash of 4, 5 & 6, but if you read the books written in canon over the last 30 years, everything is a rehash with minor twists.
After it's all said and done, I'll still buy movie tickets, probably see episode 9 twice in theaters.

I will even buy all that, because I'm not overly invested in the SWU.
But Ep8 was literally terrible as a movie. Twenty years from now, Joel Hodgson's spiritual successor will be ripping it to shreds with his robot pals.

Thank you. I bought my Friday night ticket for ep9 when they went on sale. I've loved all the movies to varying degrees, let's face it you can be critical on ALL of them if you tried. How much of a badass did they make Fett out to be in Empire, to kill him off by a 3 Stooges pratfall by a blind guy?
But I might be biased.
In reply to Jerry :
Fett was always supposed to be a bit of a patsy.
All the movies have their story, pacing, or character flaws, but only 8 has been a badly shot and directed movie. I'll still go see 9 because I'm a fan and need to see if the leaks are true or if it's decent enough.

Even in the theater I knew 1, 2, and 3 were badly shot and directed movies. I actually watched the 1 hour and 41 minute review of Revenge of the Sith by redlettermedia and have to agree with all of his points panning the movie.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bYWAHuFbLoc&feature=emb_title
I'm just not sure anything can convince me that 8's flaws hold a candle to 3's flaws. Leaden dialog, slow pacing in crisis times, dizzying swings in tone from slapstick comedy to child murdering, flat affect in front of nothing but green screens for 2 hours and 20 minutes.. I could go on.
In reply to dculberson :
I always thought 2 was the weakest of 1-3 in that aspect, but honestly it's been 10 years since I've seen them. I should watch with a critical eye now.
I watched 7 and 8 in theaters. Will not be watching 9. Disney lacks what is to me the most valuable asset of Star Wars: bold, crazy ideas that no one else in sci-fi is brave enough to try. Phantom Menace is probably my second favorite film behind New Hope. Some of the stuff in TPM went down horribly, and some of it was awe-inspiring. Disney is playing it safe with the beloved original trilogy aesthetic and characters, while carefully avoiding references to the controversial but bold prequels. It gets a solid "meh" from me.
I went back and rewatched all the Star Wars movies recently.
The OG trilogy is still my favorite with Empire at the top. Rogue 1 for me is by a long way the best of the rest. Solo was decent. The rest are pretty trash honestly.
The prequels are amazing for memes and stuff though.
