This is music that you blast out of the window while screaming 90mph through the desert, as Satan chases you because you stole his favorite bong.

down, electric wizard, obviously black sabbath.
With Black Sabbath any of their Ozzy albums except never say die and for Dio era Dehumanizer are probably their best albums like that. Heaven and Hell and Mob rules are good albums but not really all stoner metal. Sign of the Southern Cross is a great song.
Down is stoner+hillbilly metal.
Jere mentions a lot of good bands.
Sunn is a good band not mentioned.

I am personally reviving this thread to mention how much times have changed. This was the Old Duke speaking.
New Duke listens to a ton of stoner / doom stuff nowadays, and so do my coworkers. Hey, I ask what they want to hear, I don't get any answers, so they listen to what I want:
Karma To Burn
Sleep
Electric Wizard
Orange Goblin
Corrosion Of Conformity
Fu Manchu
Elder
Opeth
Mastodon
1000mods
Black Sky Giant
Tortuga
Electric Octopus
King Buffalo
[edit]
Monolord
Wo Fat
Also a lot of post-rock, maybe not as heavy, but in the same vein:
God Is An Astronaut
Stone Rebel
Space Fox
The Sun's Evil Twin
Whale Fall
Sleeping Pandora
Liquify
MONO
sleepmakeswaves
I'm forgetting a bunch of other artists / bands. An astounding amount of great heavy music is coming out of eastern Europe, the Adriatic, and South America these days.
I just gotta say, Duke, thanks for bringing this up. I wasn't around the first time.
Hey, anyone remember Skindred?

A major yes to God Is an Astronaut as well as Fu Manchu.
This might be too fast for this thread, but it's still heavy AF.

But; they're the same band! I love The Sword and 1000mods in this genre. 1000mods just grinds so hard. Love listening to it while working in the garage
And adding American Sharks to the conversation.
One more–from before we had ever heard the term stoner metal: some Porn Orchard from the early '90s. I saw these dudes a bunch while in school.

Gotta love an album that clocks in at a crisp 19 minutes.
Stone Deaf
The guitarist/singer is a dear friend. They've been doing the work for years. Good Stuff out of New Castle, Colorado.
Pretty much my go to genre of music. Great bands listed here.
A little different than some is my local band Scissorfight.
Don't forget All Them Witches, Graveyard, and Stoned Jesus
Monolord is my new favorite. Swedish stoner doom. So heavy.

I saw American Sharks open for GWAR a few years back. Totally dug them.
Plus, come on, Repo Man.
Another sludgy Athens band from BITD: Bliss.
Probably closer to shoe gaze than stoner metal, but I'd still include A Place to Bury Strangers on a mix tape:

Univox bass FTW. (I have 2-1/2 of them.)

Yeah, they're definitely one I forgot to mention.
I'm not sure where Grand Magus lands in the doom/stoner/sludge spectrum but they are in fact awesome.
I like Sleep....
but....
If Stoner Metal was stoned, would it be Sun 0))) ?
