Morning,
I know a lot of you guys live down in Georgia and I'll be down there this week for work. Going to be staying in Macon so wondering if anyone had some suggestions on what to check out there in the evenings. I'll be basically walking distance to the Ocmulgee National Monument so will probably hit that up but other than that I got nothing planned.
Thanks.
Nothing.
I'm pretty sure there isn't anything between Savannah and Atlanta. Maybe a pine tree or two.
But, I haven't been there is years.
The Museum of Aviation in Warner Robins is nearby.
Aviation museum
Aviation Museum is fantastic but is about a 20 min drive out of Macon,
the Ocmulgee mounds are cool, but it's a lot of walking and is probably better in daylight. They may even be closed after dark, I'm not sure
. If you're a classic rock fan, The Big House Allman bros museum is a must-see, and you have to eat at the H&H Family restaurant - the bros had a strong relationship with the owners and the place is practically a museum but still serves pretty good southern cooking.
Downtown Cherry street is the place for good eats and the bar scene. Eat at The Rookery, it's a Macon landmark that has really stepped up with good modern food.
If you are into history or architecture, pay the $10 or whatever to tour The Hay House. It was one of the most technologically advance homes in the country when it was built in the early 1800s.
If you are the kind of person who thinks monuments are cool, try to walk through Rose Hill Cemetery. It really is beautiful and dates back to the late 1700s. They may still be offering tours, but it's free to walk or drive around during daylight hours, but closed after dark.
If you let me know what kind of stuff you're into I can give you more. I've lived here most of my life and there are some pretty good things going on these days.
They should really change their name to Bacon, GA. Then it would be a tourist hotspot! Bacon-themed restaurants, the Bacon museum, Baconland Funpark...

The exit??
No seriously, the Aviation Museum in WR is a pretty good one, but I don't think it is open in the evenings.

The wife always want to have lunch at: http://www.thewhistlestopcafe.com when we are in the area.
Is the Plastican factory still there? Maybe they have a tour.

Yeah, I think the mounds may be closed at 5pm best I can tell. My coworker just suggested the whistle stop cafe too. Thanks for the ideas so far!
Whistlestop's worth the drive if you've seen the movie and want to see the location. Food quality is okay but not the best, but the place is kinda cool. I just did a mountain bike ride from the river park across the tracks from the restaurant yesterday. The trees are really close to the best color we'll see this year and it's a beautiful area. About a 20-30 min drive out of downtown.

Yeah, just got in, had to drive down from ATL. I'll be working out in Juliette so whistlestop's will be lunch one or more days. I'm down by the coliseum so going to walk up and down cherry to see what's going on there. I'll be sure to stop in The Rookery. I think most of the other stuff I probably won't get to as will probably be on the job till 5ish each day. Thanks for the suggestions. Speaking of old family home places, I might actually do the drive down to Warner Robins. My grand parents met there at the close of WWII and the house they lived in is still standing according to google maps so might drive by that.
