So #2 Daughter is heading off to Ottawa for University in the fall. She's been looking for apartments. I've copied a response that she received below. She's been getting a fair number of these. It smells like a scam and we've been ignoring them but what is the end game? If we respond back will they be looking for a deposit before we see the condo? Just curious if anyone has any experience. On a side note if any of the GRM readership happens to live in Ottawa and knows of a one bedroom place near uOttawa please pm me.

"Thanks for the email. I'm happy to let you know that there is no issue with the kind of lease you want and no problem with you with the rent. Yes it is pet friendly and furnished as you have it in the pictures i sent you and there is a parking spot for you. I was putting it on for sale before my mom said i should not sell my properties. Then i followed my mom's advice so i decided to rent it out. It will only be given out to the right person that will take very good care of the place and the facilities. I have really decided to give out my apartment as a result of my mother sickness. I was advice to move back to her in Manitoba. Because my mother needs my full attention and am the only one left for her. She was diagnose of cancer and she is a diabetic patient. For this reason I can’t live here in Ontario cos I will be taking care of her and taking her to see the doctors at the appointed times. That is why am here in Manitoba right now. I hope you can see the kind of situation I am facing right away. I will want you to put her in your prayers. I will be renting out my apartment for $700 (Including Utilities) and a Damage deposit of $400 (refundable) and I need to inform you as well that money is not the major reason why I am renting it out and its also part of the reason cos i will be needing some money to get my mom medicine. I want someone who can take care of it as if he/she owns it. The Address of the property is : 1300 Richmond Rd Ottawa, ON. I was actually working with a Realtor's earlier but noticed he increased the rent more than i expected he increased the rent and deposit, So since i see he is not honest with his job i decided to get it done myself So i have decided to rent it out myself that is why am replying to your advert on Kijiji am not around in Ontario and i don’t want any third parties to help or do anything for me about this cos I have learnt my lesson from the Realtor. Please I will like you to drive by to the address to view the exterior of the building for you to get a better view of the building and the neighborhood looks like and get back to me. But i think it will be better to get the keys to view the interior at once. The stress is getting much for me here. And let me know if you would like it and then we can talk on how you will be getting the keys and documents to check the interior and other details. But if you are willing to work with my situation. let me know so that we can discuss the rent further. Waiting for your respond soon"

1st sign it's a scam is the fact that everything is okay, no problems with whatever you want to do. The place is perfect. 2nd sign is using the word advert. Very few people I know of refer to their Craigslist ad as an advert.

3rd sign is it is a long typed response trying to make it sound credible.

In reply to ScreaminE:

Yup. Like I said in my note we've been ignoring these type of responses. I'm just wondering what the end game is. I'm guessing their next move would be to ask for a deposit before you can view the place, but is that all they're after?

Might be wanting to "run a credit check" and do an identity theft thing once they have the SSN, etc.

That rental scam has become pretty popular in recent times.

yeah, its a send the money ill send the keys thing. (my guess). had to deal with an amazing number of these last time I looked to rent (2-3 years ago). Basically stop looking at the ones advertised for cheap on CL.

Just flag the 'advert' and move on.
