I'd like to put a 2m or dual band rig in the little ole beat up Ranger.

Here are my options:

  1. Cheap ($30) dual band HT that will last a few years. Options aren't plentiful. It will be a pain in the ass to program, but it will do the job for super cheap. Low power.
  2. Move my IC-2200H from the F150 to the Ranger with a quick disconnect for easy swapping.
  3. Buy a new mobile rig (probably a IC-2300H) and secure it an enclosure for security. Both Icom units max out at 65 watts which is... fun.
  4. Any other suggestions?

I'm leaning against option 2. The ranger isn't too secure. I never leave anything expensive in it.

I can only say that my Samurai spent a lot of time outside without the full canvas top, and with a RadioShack 2m mobile under the dash. I never had any issue. Your mileage may vary.

I would go a cheap BaoFeng with a mag mount. The guys I hear talk on them sound excellent for a 40 dollar radio. I run a ft-1900r in my jeep with a hustler and it is sweet. Password protected so if they steal it they cant use it.

This may be the way to go, although I'm installing a shorty antenna on the roof. Been finding the BaoFeng for $30. Scanning all VHF and UHF bands are a huge plus. That may lead to a perm install on an IC-2300H, though. I'm planning on installing an old cheap CB behind the seat with all the controls on the mic. Used to use it in the P71.

The truck will be working with me in seedy neighborhoods.
