Lake Placid-Tupper Lake Region in the Adirondacks. There is a ghost town and a mountain you can drive up,slowly.   The Wild Center is fun.

Another vote for Acadia/Mt Desert Island here. Lakes, ocean, mountains - I've never been anywhere else that packs such a diversity of scenery and experiences into  as small of a geographic area.

We have always found NY State Parks to be nice.  The Adirondacks are a great suggestion.  Also traveling along the St Lawrence.

We are hoping to get back into Canada this summer, but it seems to be less and less chance.  sad

In reply to 11GTCS :

In addition to the Lakes Region, Vermont is not that far away with more lakes.  NH lake region is quite close to NH Motor Speedway.  I don't know the status of the drag strip, Rockinhgam, about 90 minutes away.

Ok, revisiting this with a new caveat.  I won't get into details, but Mom is on a list for some dental surgery and her schedule is a bit weird.  It really isn't, but she's understandably apocalyptic about it because of her health issues.  The nephews both got good jobs for the summer as well.

We're altering our distance parameters.  We're looking for something that is close enough to central PA that mom could be close to her doctor/orthodontist if needed, and the nephews can come and go on their days off.  The nephews seem to be able to get several days off in a row, which means 4 hour radius should do.  It's worth it to them to drive that far for a few days.

4-ish hour radius from Harrisburg PA, potential for boating/fishing, some fun stuff to do.  Thoughts?

Eh, my wife and I started staying in the Poconos area right after the kids were born.  Easy commute to my parents' place.  Been there almost every year since.  There's golf, the Delaware River, which we've canoed on a few times, State parks, waterfalls, casinos, go-kart tracks, and Hickory Run State Park--home of the remarkable "Boulder Field" which is a great place to hike if you'd like to turn an ankle.  I have memories of being there as a kid, and just had to show it to my kids as well.
