Here is the issue.

Do you see it ? If you don't look at the window spacing.
What I want to do is remove the 5 windows and replace them with three 48" sliding windows, or at minium correct for the spacing and put real windows in (currently they are just storm windows).

I have had a couple people out to look at the job. I got cornered at the blue big box store when pricing windows, so they where one, even though I told them this is not a R and R window job and requires framing, they came out, told me I would need custom windows at 1000 a piece, the 200 dollar pellas in the store are no good, and they would send some one else out for the framing. I see getting caught in the middle if something does not go right, he estimated the total to be around 10K, with a door and R and R the 2 end windows. Ouch. The other contractor seemed to be a good guy, in at around 6K, he was going to write something up and drop it buy. Never heard back. The one other person interested in the job over the phone never got back either. If they cant follow though on getting back to me to do the job, whats going to happen once they have my money. Several others did not even bother to call back.

So over the last couple days I pulled the paneling off the inside to see whats there for framing. The guys that came out where concerned that there could be issues with the current way it was framed that if modified for the larger windows, the roof may not be supported correctly.

So here are some pics of the inside framing. This may be a do it myself job based on the way it has started. I would rather be working on my car, but finding reliable good people in my area does not seem like a winning situation. Am I looking at 10 K of reconstruction work here of are they blowing smoke ?

I am not a framer, but that doesn't look like $10k to me.  Even $6k seems like a lot.

The thing that amazes me the most is that someone actually built it that way.

I don't think the people that built the house, or added the sun porch (might be the same person) knew how to use any of the following, tape measure, framing square, or level. I have found lots of odd stuff in the 20 years I have owned the house.

The house was built in 58, not sure when the sun porch was added, I am thinking not to long after.

The 6k guy is being fair to you and himself depending on how far you expect him to go.  I’d probably be closer to 8k with a door.

It’s not just a window install, it’s rebuilding the entire wall from the inside then refinishing the outside to make it look good. There’s woodwork and panel repair inside then.
