My parents have told me about when everything was closed in MO on Sunday's. They both said that they liked it, it forced you to spend time at home alone.

They sell beer in the supermarket, but only the nasty 3.2 crap. YOu can't buy real beer at the supermarket/gas station, regardless of the day of the week.

It reminds of the scene in SLC Punk. If you haven't seen it, then go rent it. Hell of an awesome movie.

I happen to be an exception though as I fly a lot to Minnesota and it’s always on a Sunday when they have the 3/2 restriction which, if you aren’t familiar, is where only beer can be sold and it’s a special mix where you need to drink 3 to get the effect of 2. Anyway, I find this 3/2 thing amusing as right across the boarder in Wisconsin, you’ll promptly be issued a hefty fine if you’re caught not drinking.

Actually, some legislators in Minnesota are trying to get rid of the Sunday liquor laws right now. The story I saw on the news the other night indicates that the liquor store owners are pretty ambivalent about the whole idea...they figure people aren't going to buy any more than they do now, they'll just space out their purchasing habits over seven days instead of six. As a result, the stores won't make any more money, plus they'll never get a day off like they do now.

On the other hand, in the same story they interviewed some liquor store owners in Wisconsin (which is just across the river, maybe a half hour away from where I sit) and they're concerned about losing business if Minnesotans don't have to drive over there on Sundays.

...if i remember correctly...

...the last time this came up, it was defeated with the help of liquor store owners.

They can't afford to compete with big-box grocers who are already open on Sunday down here. They wouldn't get enough business on Sunday at dedicated bottle shops to cover the extra labor and business costs they said.

so how bad could this be? maybe we should bring this back?

Well, if it does pass and the liquor store owners get mad, then just stay closed on Sunday then. I mean, Chick-Fil-A is closed on Sundays, doesn't mean i cant have a chicken sandwich. Pop Eyes is open, KFC is open....

I lived in PA for a while, and while your laws are weirder, at least you can still buy some carry out on Sunday. Sure, not as much and you have to go to specific places to get it, but it can be done. Here, you CANNOT buy a beer and take it home with you on a Sunday. Period. Liquor stores are closed, grocery stores have to close the alcohol isle/section, and no carry-out from bars or restaurants.

We have this same issue in Alabama. I solved it by buying another refrigerator and filling it completely with beer.

Geez, this is silly.

I live in MS, and we do have the "local option" here. My town has no Sunday sales, but if you're desperate to get drunk, you can go five miles east where there's a wal-mart with an open beer section. I believe liquor works the same way, it's set by local government. Which leads to funny situtations like I mentioned with beer sales. You can have a dry county but a wet town. Weird.

It just blows my mind, thats all. They are always talking about slashes to the budget, furlough days, cutting fire stations, ect. Now I know this wont solve the budget crisis at all, but hey, if you add another day of alcohol sales, there are taxes that go along with sales. Wow! More money! Money changing hands! Its AMAZING!

Sure I can, and do. This is not an issue of convenience, it's an issue of not wanting the state I love run as a religious theocracy, regardless of whose religion we're talking about.

One piece of E36 M3 who's too fat, lazy, and stupid to open his damned store and make money does not equal the numbers and power of the Christian Coalition. Yes, I'm aware that some fat, lazy, stupid liquor store owners have petitioned their senators to kill the bill. They do not have the power of the religious zealots.

THATS EXACTLY what Im saying!!! He doesn't have to open his store! He owns it, he can do what he wants. If he doesn't want to make more money, he doesn't have to.

Well, saw this coming...

ATLANTA -- Sources told Channel 2 political reporter Lori Geary on Thursday that the issue of Sunday liquor sales is dead for the session after a state Senate caucus. Georgia is among only three states that ban the Sunday sale of alcohol at stores. Earlier this month, a House panel approved a bill aiming to reverse that. The bill, approved on Feb. 9, would have allowed communities to ask voters to decide if they want to allow Sunday sales after 12:30 p.m. It originally only permitted beer and wine sales but was amended to include liquor in areas that already permit the sale of spirits. Previous efforts to allow Sunday alcohol sales in Georgia have stalled amid a veto threat from former Gov. Sonny Perdue. However, Gov. Nathan Deal has said he would not veto such a measure. Caucus members held a closed-door meeting to discuss the issue, but it ended without any resolution Wednesday. "While I support it, I certainly recognize that there's a lot of people who don't support it. If there just isn't the support, there's no need to continue to dwell on it," state Senate Republican majority leader Chip Rogers said. In January, an exclusive WSB-TV poll, conducted by InsiderAdvantage, showed support for the bill was widely divided by geography. Respondents across Georgia supported the bill by a 52 percent to 40 percent margin, however, when broken apart regionally, there was a clear divide over the proposition. The poll found 67 percent of metro Atlanta residents favor Sunday liquor sales, with just 23 percent against it. However, in south Georgia the numbers are nearly reversed. The poll showed only 31 percent favor the bill, with 63 percent in opposition. The poll had a margin of error of plus or minus 5 percent. InsiderAdvantage CEO Matt Towery said the inclusion of liquor into the bill may be responsible for some of the backlash. “Things have really changed when you add the liquor part to it. I think that’s the reason you’re getting the bad reaction, particularly outside metro Atlanta,” Towery told Geary.

THAT's a big topic here in Ct., Right now no sales anywhere--except bars and restaurants....The mom and pop stores are afraid sales of liquor at the grocery stores will cut into their sales so much, it'll be financially crippling, and for many, sales wouldn't pay the light bill.

OTOH: MARYLAND: WhenI lived down there, a liquor store had a DRIVE UP WINDOW for sales after 10pm....

Uhhhh-huh-hu-huh-hu, his name is 'Gooch.' It'll be interesting to see if I get an honest response...or any response at all.

Dear Senator Gooch, I'm interested to know what your position is regarding the bill allowing Georgia voters to decide whether or not Sunday alcohol sales should be permitted in their respective communities. With the controversy surrounding the bill, and the puzzling fact that after flying through the house, it's gotten tied up in committee in the senate, it seems prudent to express your stance in the "issues" section of your website. Thank you for your time

OMG!!! The World is going to hell in a hand basket and it's all the religious rights' fault!!! All because some people can't buy hard liquor on one day of the week. I guess they are way too busy on the other six days to get their booze, or keep a supply at home. That's right, it can only be replenished on Sunday. Blame it on the "Bible Thumpers", not the retailers that don't want to be open, or the workers that might enjoy a day off, or the legislative process. It's just easier to blame the "Bible Thumpers".
