Unfortunately I'm about as far away from the challenge as you can get.
This is gonna be my wife's hot rod. She has been in a minivan for the last 10 years so this should be a nice change ;)

I got code p1229 TB motor fault. I pulled the connector and cleaned everything, no change. I measured the voltage on the harness and just got a 12v pulse on key on but no voltage when I press the pedal (but the engine should be running I guess). Need to track down some diagnostic steps for dbw.
Vacuumed out about 5 gallons of pine needles. Good times.
Here's a link to Jaguar's OBDII Diagnostic Quick Reference for 2003
If that doesn't help, Jagrepair.com has a lot of other resources available too, or ask on JaguarForums.com.
The Jaguar Technician Information System (JTIS) is a CD based workshop manual that is available for download, but it is a PITA to get running on anything later than Windows XP. Search Jaguarforums.com for 'JTIS' and you can find the latest download and info that may or may not work for getting it working in Windows 7 and later. The software can be frustrating to navigate too depending on what you're looking for. You may also be able to find pdf downloads of the service manual (I have some of it for my 2001 XJR but don't remember where I found it).
Thats the stuff I needed! Thanks!
I pulled the TB today - it was caked up with corrosion. freed it up & put it all back together. Engine starts! YAY! Engine smokes BOO! Engine smokes a LOT. Still in restricted performance mode, now have a P0332 code for knock sensor fault. That may be a bad sensor or maybe I knocked something loose (or rodent damage).
I think compression check is next, was really hoping it was something minor.

I think I would pay that for one of those even knowing it would never run. Worth 500 just to have it around.
If you need parts, there are a few places I've used online that are cheaper than the dealer.
Merriam Parts and Jaguar Land Rover Reno are Jaguar dealers selling parts online. Motors Cars Ltd has new parts (OEM and others) but tend to be more expensive than the first two. If you need a special tool for something (timing chain tensioners for example) they likely have it and will sell it or rent it or have good enough pictures that you can make your own. Coventry West has new parts but also takes in a lot of salvage cars and parts them out. Rock Auto has a lot of parts too.
Slowly making progress. Due to the amount of smoke that came out I spent the last few days checking for used engines & figuring maybe its just valve guides/seals.. Finally did a compression test yesterday and everything was pretty good (~150psi on the 1st 4 cylinders). Spark plugs were clean (but looked new). Thinking it was down to valve seals I decide to start it up. What the hey, no smoke. Like zero, nada. Whew. must have been some drippings from sitting.
Still has a knock sensor fault, so I'm moving on that next. At least I'm not pulling an engine.
Thanks for the link to the JTIS - I have it installed but its not very intuitive. For whatever reason I cannot register with jaguarforums, it says my IP address is new & screened for spam or something third party, blah blah. I tried twice, I can certainly search the forums.
So far I think I just need a battery, coolant reservoir (leaks), and maybe a knock sensor. Just maybe soon I can back it off the trailer ;)
Give me your email and ill pm an admin on the jag forums to look at your account. Which forum though?
Sorry for the delays - zero goof of time lately.
yupididit - i tried at jagforums.com from my cell & also desktop & got the same screening error. Email I tried was Kendall dot Jones at gmail.com
So, to date I've made little progress. Car is still on the trailer. I told myself I need to drive it off in case I need to get it back on the trailer (to take it to the scrap yard :)
So far: - found stuck throttle body. Pulled it, cleaned it and now works.
found 1 dead knock sensor. Rather than pulling the whole dang SC, I added a new knock sensor cable tied to the head. Ghetto but need to see if there is something terminal first.
found broken fitting on coolant reservoir. Will live with it until car comes off the trailer.
after I changed on knock sensor the second knock sensor faulted out and throttle body fault showed back up. F n he'll.
Had 15 minutes today to check into this. Found that I left the 2nd knock sensor unplugged. Nice! Restarted the engine & no throttle body faults (or knock sensor!) Idled it & checked faults - none! Checked pending faults and have a misfire on cylinder 3 and the p1316 fault. I've checked the passenger side compression I'm the past - all normal. Could be the gas that's been sitting in it for almost a year. Maybe a coil?
Never the less, I think i may be able to drive it soon. The p1316 code limits rpm to 3k but hopefully gas or coils will fix it.
Also, no major smoke anymore so must have been from sitting or my TB cleaning.
Progress!

I don't think so. 1st owner was a lawyer or something. 2nd owner (who I got the car from) only had it for a couple months - cannabis farmer who really didn't know much about the car.
It has the CATS suspension, whatever that is.
How did I miss that you bought one!! Awesome buy.
How does the s type compare to the x type in size and weight?
In reply to Robbie:
The S-type is about 10 inches longer, an inch wider, and an inch taller than an X-type. The S-type R is about 500lbs heavier than an X-type 2.5 AWD.
Is there a good bi directional scan tool out there for these? Something similar to the STAR that is used on Mercs??
Back from the dead. I did get this car running and drove it last summer. As seen in the picture above it was very dirty and also very low. Turns out it has H&R springs on it, but still seemed to be riding on the bump stops. Cool & all but not very practical.
Car has electronic adjusting shocks - CATS they call it. Uses accelerometers to stiffen shocks when needed. Whatev, they are all leaking & not working. They are also super freaking expensive. I bought a used set sight unseen and low & behold they are for the wrong year and the fronts wont fit.
So, car is now on jackstands in the driveway with one shock removed. I can try to find another set of fronts (there is one on ebay) or ditch the fancy stuff and go with regular bilsteins.
If anyone wants to check their local car-part.com or junkyard, I need a set of front CATS shocks for a 2003 STR or a full set of shocks & springs from a v8 S Type.

This thread made me go look on CL to see if there were any $500 XJRs locally. Found this one instead.
By the way, that engine is awesome. I've got the engine covers off and the compressor whine is <sweet>. My kids scream every time I tromp on the gas.
