I started watching a Yankees game last night and flicked around during a commercial. A documentary called Superheroes was on another channel.
Basically it's normalish people that like to dress up as crime fighters and cruise the big city. No, this can't be a documentary, it must be comedy.
I can't think of a faster way to get knucked up than approaching a total stranger in a home made crime fighter outfit and telling him to knock it off.
I'm feeling normaler.......

Real life Batmen . . . Sounds like a recipe of someone getting shot or their ass whooped. . .

While its probably a poor idea AT BEST, I sorta like it. The way I see it, these people have decided that the streets aren't safe enough. Rather than piss and moan about it to the government, or whine about how the police never do anything, they're taking care of it themselves. I like that sort of can-do attitude, even if the whole idea is somewhat misguided. I wish more people thought like that and did crap for themselves instead of waiting for someone to do it for them. We'd have a lot less problems and a much larger productive portion of society.
... but the world really needs more superheroes

It.... kinda does. Too many whiny bitches and not enough "do work" types. I think if more people stood out from the crowd and said they weren't going to take that kinda bullE36 M3- starting acting for themselves, we'd be a lot better off.

I'm not sure that superheros are any better than cops....outsourcing your safety/protection to other people doesn't seem natural. I'm not saying that we don't need a police force, we certainly do, but being someone that criminals want to avoid seems like a better primary defense.

In reply to JoeyM:
Then you don't want the gun as brandishing it is considered a criminal activity.
Criminals will avoid a dude with leprosey, puss flled open sores or a cough that produces a lot of blood. Some combo is what I think you are looking for.
This sort of thing has been going on for awhile now.
Here's a wiki listing of real life superheros in the U.S.
Here's a website dedicated to teaching how to be a real life superhero.
I think these guys have a screw loose to be honest. Comic books do not mirror real life.
Kickass was a great movie.

The only way I could see it working is Iron Man or a technologically advanced Batman.
You'd need a strength augmenting body armor that still provides a good deal of flexibility. Iron Man's armor is thick enough to allow for protection against heavy weapons, and some sort of "helper" system imbedded in a HUD could tell you where/how to avoid certain death. Oh, and the ability to fly out of bad situations is good too.
You may say "why not give the armor to police" well...then you've gotta worry about bad guys getting their hands on it.
Part of the reason Iron Man is my favorite super hero, is because all of it (except the power source) makes sense. Really rich guy who's an engineering genius develops a system that he keeps to himself, and lucky for us, he's isn't corrupt.
Now, if you had a few screws loose, and you had a slightly self destructive personality, you could buy some body armor, a combat helmet, some big guns, and I'd think you'd be able handle most drug dealers.
Unfortunately the majority of our crime is not "open", it's not a bunch of dudes in an abandoned warehouse. It's everyday people with a few screws loose who instead of trying to the save the world they want to kill their husband, or shoot up a school, or kids who think their gangsters, druggies who try to steal tv's and xboxes from people's homes.

Some that you recognize, some that you hardly ever heard of.

People who worked and suffered and struggled for fame
Some who succeeded and some who suffered in vain

Yup, remember the LA/North Hollywood bank robbery shootout back in 1997? "The robbers were protected by body armor which could not be penetrated by the officers' handgun and shotgun ammunition." <a href="The robbers were protected by body armor which could not be penetrated by the officers' handgun and shotgun ammunition. " From Wikipedia
Here's youtube footage for those who don't know what I'm talking about.
A lot of these guys aren't fighting crime in the comic sense of go beat up bad guys. A lot times they just walk around, call the cops, and attempt to non-violently intervene in things.
I think it's a bit crazy, but sometimes these people are making a small but good difference. It seems silly, but who am I to neigh say people who want to help in their community?

Indeed. Romain Rabillard found that out recently.

Realistically that is all they should do. Otherwise they are wide open for getting sued or killed. Going farther clearly gets into vigilantism violation of rights issues.
