The best thing for recovery from a hernia is to be in a good mood. Therefore, I recommend that you rent Monty Python, Strangebrew, Caddyshack, Superbad, etc., to watch during the recovery.

Umbilical, or groin? Umbilical = NBD. Good luck, either way.

The conventional (non-laproscopic) inguinal herniaraphy is a cool surgery. Nice, simple, straight forward. Tell him to make sure not to cut that nerve going to your balls, 'cuz you might need that one.

Been there, done that, really was no big deal. A bit if enforced rest, I didn't have really serious pain. That I can remember.

I had an umbilical hernia repaired ~2 years ago, it wasn't that bad. I'm back to abnormal now.

Two former surgical sites. One beside my belly button, the other at my former ileostomy site. They found a white milky substance in my abdominal cavity that they can't explain, so they sent some to the lab for tests, and instead of putting mesh in, they sutured the sites up, and now laughing and coughing suck hard. IV pain meds are nice though.

You are not and never have been normal. Don't lie.

I actually had one of those nerves "clipped" a number of years back when having my J pouch reconnected... Of course, everything got back to fairly normal with time, but what they forgot to tell me when going over the possible side effects was that nothing would work down there for at least a week or two, due to the swelling. What's the first thing an eighteen year old does upon waking up? Yep, I freaked out on that one.

Good luck man!! Wish you the well. Hear that sitting is interesting for the first few days but after that no problem.

I go in for an arterial scope w/possible angioplasty and stent if necessary of my renal arteries (the main arteries that feed the kidneys) in 2 weeks. Seems they have a lot to do with blood pressure and mine are narrowing causing hypertension level blood pressure. First procedure I've had done (not counting the colonoscopy when I turned 50).

Interesting read, hope you're doing well. I've been dealing with a hip problem for a few years now. Had 4 MRIs, x-rays, injections, etc... Think there's a torn labrum, but they're also suspecting a sports hernia. Just had my most recent MRI looking for said hernia, going to doctor on Thursday to discuss results. I'm likely heading for the chopping block, but I'm going to put it off until February. I've read recovery time is 4-6 weeks. I have no idea how I'm going to do that...I'm way too active.

Just make sure you get it early enough that you are ready to race by April!

That's exactly why I'm planning February. Right now I'm in the middle of my crazy Xmas display frenzy. I've put too much work into it to cancel it. I need most of January to take all that stuff down. And April is race season. So I figure that if I do it around the end of Jan/first of Feb I should be 100% by mid to late March. It's about the only time of year where I really could do it.

And finally I pooped. This means that their biggest worry is no longer there (blockage). I don't remember ever being so happy to have a bowel movement. Now to heal so that I can work at the track. Day job is at a desk, so that will be easy.
