I NEED another car, something to play with, its a 2.2 non-interference motor, with 5 speed impreza wagon with176k on it for $1600, sounds like a deal to me. its at a dealer, but thats fine, current inspections and all that. NJ car.

I'm thinking I need something slightly bigger then my integra and a wagon would fit the bill. I'd prefer to get the 1.8 motor, but they are like hens teeth. Whatever. So please talk me out of it or not.

The good thing about the 93 is that every impreza is the same from 93-01 so parts galore, and the H6 motors look very nice in there.

Unless its been swapped, a 93 Imp will have the 1.8L. Not so much power as the 2.2 but they do take boost better

why cant you play with an integra?

well the integra is an automatic for one thing, the auto's do take to boost rather well, they just shift really really hard is all. For the suby, I think I could easily get them down atleast another $300, I found it on CL, they came down $100 on their own in 3 days. If they really want to sell it anyway.

Mith612- It hasn't been swapped, its the motor that has come with the car, according to edmunds and carfax anyway.

The 2.2 wasn't offered in the Impreza until 1995, and that year only available with the automatic. 1996 was the first year for 2.2/5MT/AWD. Something's not right ...

What he said. That should be a 1.8. And I don't know why any sane person would prefer the lackluster 1.8 over the much peppier and indestructible 2.2.

mith612 and ddavidv are correct, the 2.2 was not available as a stock option on the Impreza until model year 1995. Also, beware of the thinking that all parts are interchangeable for 1st gen Imprezas, you have to make sure you are getting parts from another awd Impreza and not a fwd. Even then you will run into some components that will not match up properly. Then there's the whole OBD 1/OBD 2 thing...

However, I would still buy it in a heartbeat, but then again, I have a problem and it's name is Subaru.

I'm gonna take the drive to see it in the next day or so, how do you tell between the 2.2 or 1.8 from looking at it in the engine bay? Is there a block stamp like a honda someplace?

Either way though, I'd like to swap in a h6 at somepoint, so as long as it runs and has most of its problems taken car of already. I know the timing belt water pump situation is done, not that they are really that hard anyway, its nice that atleast the 1.8 is a non-interference engine though.

i believe the 2.2 usually has a plastic engine cover that says 2.2

wasnt the 1.8 carbuerated too?

Buy it. baby seats fit in it fine. Room for baby gear. When you go for a bigger seat for the tike you need to be a little more choosey though(britax diplomat works though). I have 3 subies and love them all.

I bought a '99 with 70,000 fewer miles on it for $1800, so don't you dare pay $1600 for that one.

Nope and nope. The 2.2L was coverless and the 1.8L was fuel-injected.

As for H-6 swaps, they are possible, but they are heavy and there are not a lot of hop-up parts out there for them. Now a 2.0L or 2.5L WRX engine swap, that's a swap worth doing! I wanted to do a WRX swap on my old 2.2L coupe, but there wasn't a single suspension component that wasn't rusty as hell.

Talk you out of it? Well, for that price, yes. But get on Craigslist and find another one!!!

I want a swapped GC track rat someday.

My only experience with a Subie was not a good one. It had the distinction of being the car I kept for the shortest period of time, and I tend to keep cars FOREVER. Maybe my choice of Subie's was poor, but an Outback with a n/a 2.5 is an absolute DOG, even with a 5-speed, and it exhibited body roll on a scale I would expect in a 70's era Cadillac. I'd run in the opposite direction at maximum speed. Do not buy a Subaru!

So....

You bought a Subaru Outback, which is a soft sprung, N/A, lifted, soccer mom version of their regular cars, and expected sports car performance? Umm... you're doing it wrong, dude.

And besides, Subarus are like Legos. Pretty much any parts from a WRX, STI, etc. (including aftermarket stuff) will bolt onto an old GC-chassis or a Legacy chassis, even that sluggish Outback you had.

The first gen Legacy 2.2 had that cover. Impreza's and 2nd gen Leg's are naked.

All EJ have a casting stamp on the block just below the back/left corner of the alternator EJ-18, EJ-22...
