Seriously? All of this for a winter beater? I am assuming we're talking feet of snow and salt and the like (don't know where you live) but pay as little as possible for anything. I prefer RWD or AWD for the snow, personally, and there are tons and tons of rusty Ford/GM/Dodge trucks out there for nothing. The more dents and already present rust, the better. We should be talking 1K, not 10K. By the way, Wranglers make terrible winter beaters.

We used my wife's immaculate '01 Audi A6q 2.7T last winter. That thing was great in snow. Not exactly what you'd call a beater though.

Since we sold that car, I'm hoping it doesn't snow this winter.

I may be wrong on this but Ido not think they use salt on the roads in Reno. I doknow that just across the border in CA they plow and use sand, no salt.

Have you been up to the Lassen National Forest yet? Great roads and great scenery. My Spitfire and I spent many a wonderful hour up there. Check it out.

According to my co-workers, they do use a little salt around here, but not that much. Mostly sand and gravel. Especially gravel, as someone around here found out when going downhill in his Boxster .

The main issue is that I've got two passes to choose from to get to work, both over 7000' high.

Although given that my wife has just re-entered the job market (not that we didn't see this coming), I can probably borrow her Cherokee for those days when I need 4WD to get to work. Which means that I'll better go find out if that '84 RX7 my wife recently saw for sale locally is still for sale...

81gtv6, haven't managed to get over there yet - my last attempt a few years back when I was touristing up here was stopped by about 3' of snow.

Heck if they don't salt too much, go ahead and winter drive the rx-7, it would rock. I loved doing that in my 81 Camaro.

I drive past that almost every day on the way to work. For some reason I haven't felt compelled to call them .

Second one is way over budget for something I don't like that much - no offense to Landcruisers but I'm not really an SUV or truck person.

I like that, but I think "only" a parka might be a tad optimistic around here in winter.

I've actually just found this one in a parking lot close to work, cursory inspection suggests it's fairly decent (has been resprayed a while ago, has a little rust but looks pretty OK):

I talked to the owner and supposedly it's got a 2bbl 351 in it so I guess it should be OK-ish as a winter vehicle and occasional town car with a little offroading thrown in.

Let's see how good it turns out at closer inspection.
