The only thing I have to add to this conversation is that 80's hair rock sounds better through old crackily speakers in my 80's car than on the new speakers through the MP3 file on the computer.
Hrm, can't find a non-live (i.e. non crappy audio) version of No Use for a Name's "Feed the fire", else I'd post up.

Dunno how, but I just discovered this song:

Kind of a post-punk classic, I've discovered.

That's because mp3 is a crap format and it's a damn shame that it's so heavily bought in to.
Try encoding some stuff in Ogg Vorbis and see how that sounds (you'll need to start with CD-quality audio).
I used to be HUGE into Fat Wreck Chords catalogue in the late '90s. Mad Caddies, Lagwagon, No Use For A Name, Tilt... man... brings back memories.
descendants, vandals, minor threat, Ramones, face to face, millencolin, NOFX, DRI, bad religion, Fifteen, Diesel boy, less than jake, Real big fish, sublime, Rise against, Fugazi, Angry Samoans, Dropkick murphy, Hot Water Music, My Chemical Romance, Operation Ivy, Screeching Weasel, Snapcase, Social Distortion, Supersuckers, Dead Kennedys, Dead Milkmen, Buck-o-nine, Dancehall Crashers, Rancid, Pennywise...I got more, gimme a minute....
I like the classics - Ramones, Stooges, old Siouxsie, PIL, Sex Pistols, old Damned, the Circle Jerks, the Clash...
Weird thing..I'd been listening to a lot of different stuff from blues to medieval to folk to bluegrass. I discovered I was being laid off, and within a week went back to straight Old School Punk. My iPod looks like my record collection in college. Don't know why, I'm really not that mad!
SWMBO still doesn't believe me when I tell her Exene sings like that on purpose.

Hmmmm. I know I've got a copy of that Dead Kennedys album with "Too drunk to Berkeley" on it somewhere....
Wow, you guys've covered a lot of ground...
Agent Orange, NoMeansNo, The Hanson Brothers, Propagandhi, The Misfits, The Groovie Ghoulies, The Fastbacks, The Undertones, Stiff Little Fingers, Snuff...

I got into most of that music from the BMX scene in the mid ninety's. Watch any bmx vid from maybe 1993 thru 2003 and youll get anything from Rolling Stones to Wu Tang to Black Flag to Johnny Cash. Lots of good stuff from that Genre from my teen years...LOTS!
In reply to NickF40: Glad you liked it. It's amazing what that guy can do with nothing but some pedals and a harmonica. FWIW, he used to play with Crash Test Dummies.

Change that to mp3s encoded by morons (or are encoded with crappy encoder software, there's a fair amount of wiggle room in the standard there, so it's not just a matter of higher bitrate=better) are crap and I'm right there with you. This includes most commercial encoding as bigger file sizes = more bandwidth, and complaints that "OMG! my ipod can't hold more than a months worth of music at once because the files are bigger"
The standard allows for a wide range of options. But those doing the encoding generally don't know this or do know this, but have goals other than quality. The very flexibility that allows these choices to be made (both by the user and by the coder) is both the greatest strength and greatest weakness of the standard.
I think Im waiting on David W. and JG to weigh in. IIRC they both have valid opinions on the genre, and Im interested in their input!
I'm on a big acEEEEEEID kick right now. A & E Dept., Lochi, D.O.M., MUX, Dynamo City... You get the idea. Or maybe you don't. The important part is I'm also building my x0xb0x kit (303 clone) so I can have that beautiful sound myself. Now all I need is a decent audio mixer and a MIDI interface with more ports...
I don't have much to add other than what has already been mentioned but if you don't have Hot Water Music you should get some. Also check out Chuck Ragan, one of the frontmen from Hot Water Music. Folk music, great.
