I understand the scale issue if you have water quality problems. I don't really understand what pain it is to install - it bolts on the wall and has pipe run to it. And if you bolt it to an outside wall, the intake / exhaust tract is about 8" long.

Interesting.. I wonder how they would work here in South Jersey. All our water comes from aquifers and the water is -very- soft (and tasty) compared to many places I have lived. We never get stains or any kind of calcium buildup

I've have had a Rinnai gas tankless heater for about 4 years. It's rated ~9.5 gpm, so you can legitimately run laundry + two showers at the same time (we do have somewhat, but not ultra aggressive water saver shower heads).

You will VERY likely need to upsize the gas line for a tankless gas heater. I did. I think my heater is rated at 199,000 BTU.

My gas bill is definitely lower. I flush the heater every New Year's day and bought a new scale filter (looks like a thimble) to put back inline next time it gets flushed
