Guy is threatening to sell this for something like 15% of Challenge money. Still doing the delicate dance but you'll be the first to know if it hits the open market.

What should I know?

That is a Celica. Supra's look like this. The Celica would still be a fun car!

Yes, that is an 82-83 Celica GTS. The GTS got the flares, the IRS (I think) and the seats of a Supra. I'd buy a brand new one if they still sold them. I looked at a used 83 in 1985 and the hatch was already rusted through on the lower right side (common). They were H-Stock autocrossers back in the 80's, so not terribly fast.

That's one of my favorite cars of the 80's.

90 hp 2.2 liter RWD. Probably a metric ton of stuff you could buy to wake up the R22 motor. Rust is a concern for antique Japanese tin.

At what point did the Celica Supra go away and become just the Supra? I know for a while Supra was just a trim level for Celica.

'79-'81 The Supra had a longer nose to fit the straight six versus the 4 cylinder Celica.

'82-'85 Again longer snout for the straight six.

'86 on Celica went to FWD while the Supra got bigger and heavier, but was still RWD.

So 1986 is the answer you were seeking.

You can throw a ton of money at a 22r and you won't be happy. Even a turbo won't. Dead nuts reliable, but perennially slow. There are easy swaps, within the family no less, that will make you smile for miles.

Really good swap is 3SGE BEAMS with a 6 speed, some trans tunnel mods required, but you go from 120hp to 200hp, AND gain 20+ #/ft @ the same time.... win-win.

Bought a well used up one in 2002 to learn how to rallycross in in high school . A couple of my friends all threw in 50 bucks and we got it for a few hundred bucks. Made a rallycross course in the back of my friend's house (while his parents were away) and we trashed the daylights out of that car. Couldn't kill it and then sold it for another 300 bucks after a couple weeks. So much fun on dirt. On pavement, not so much.

Actually 86.5. I had and 86 Celica Supra and getting parts was such a pain I finally just started saying it was an 85.
