I'm sick of my iPhone 3G and the AT&T network.

I'm going to have a new phone by the end of the weekend. Tell me which I should buy.

do people really have 400 dollars to blow on a phone? The service contract for either is over 100 dollars a month!

Guy at work has the Evo 4g phone - he loves it...I guess theres an app that will comb his hair.

The boss wants the droid cuz I guess its droidier than other droids. I dont even know if those are real words.

My cousin has an Iphone and shes always waving it around trying to get good reception...I told her if she shakes it more than twice, shes playing with it. When my Uncle heard that, he punched me in the arm.

My old Nokia plays music - I think thats good isnt it? it was free.

The phones are $200, not $400. And with my company discount and family plan discount (the fiancee will also be switching to get access to my company disount), my monthly service plan will be well under $100 month.

In fact, it will be about $5 month more than why I was contractor two years ago and didn't have a discount, and that was for a regular phone with enough minutes/text for me.

This "if you don't eat rice and beans and shun cable/cellphones so you can have 13 barely running E36 M3 boxes" attitude on this forum is getting REALLY OLD.

Droid Incredible and Verizon.

I've played with the Incredible a fair amount and I'm impressed with how easy it is to use as a phone as well as a super computer media machine.

First thing to check is if you can actually get Wimax reception on the Evo 4g, as there are only a few places in the country so far that do.

I've got both an iPhone here (to keep my UK phone number and as an iPod, the former being somewhat more important) and recently got a "regular" Droid on Verizon that just seems to work. The iPhone is more polished but I do like the Droid, it's a good phone and I can get apps for most of what I need. IMHO the email client (I use K9-Mail for non-Google Mail) is actually better than the iPhone one.

That is not why I am saying that. I actually just got done looking at "smart phones" with my provider. I have been with them for 4 years, and I am trying to stay with them, but I can get two iPhones and two contracts for about 60 dollars a month less than for the Droid by Motorola.

It just frustrates me that to get anything resembling a decent phone, you have to spend half of your freaking salary. I don't mind paying for quality, but I don't personally see the added value in a smart phone, so I didn't get one.

Who said you must eat rice and beans? Im actually going to try to get a "smartphone" this weekend - but its gonna be a $50 refurb. unit thats been on the market for about 2 years now. If you wanna spend that kinda coin on the ZOMGLATESTANDGREATESTITMAKESWAFFLESDAMNIT phone, be my guest - makes the slightly aged models cheaper for me, so go for it! But I sure dont understand the appeal - the guys i work with who have that stuff (Ipads with 3g accounts and every tech nanogoodie possible) but live in efficiency apartments and complain about the poor fuel economy from their leased SUV make me laugh. Maybe spend less on widgets and more on daily necessity stuff and you can even out your cashflow some.I guess everyone just has their own priorities. A phone that can shoot lazerbeams is not one of them for me.

I have an HTC fuze, and if it's indicative of HTC quality, I would skip the EVO. The thing drives me up a friggen wall. Horrible reception, brain farts every two seconds. Give me another month and I'll toss it out the window. I regret giving up my old hp phone for this thing(sold that phone so i can't go back).

I have the EVO, and love it. Have not had any issues with it, and battery life after the ota update, and learning to charge it from my computer over night vs. the outlet, has been very good. Love the screen size, especially when using it as a GPS device. My wife and I just combined plans, and with our discount will probably be around $110 for the both of us (unlimited text and data, 1500 shared minutes), so the price is not bad at all. And the old knock on Sprint's customer service seems to be moot, now. I have had pretty good luck with them recently.

I do, however, think that, along with having better coverage, Verizon's LTE will be the 4G to have. I see Wimax dying, as only Sprint is on it, and it sounds like Sprint is already looking to leap over to LTE eventually.

So, with Verizon, you might pay a bit more, but will have better coverage, 4G should be up and running for them soon, and the latest and greatest phone Motorola.

With Sprint, you have 4G up and running already in lots of areas, less cost, and the latest and greatest phone from HTC.

Cost aside, I would lean Verizons way.

^Hmmm, interesting analysis, gives me a bit more to think about then I originally thought.

And there is no "4G" in Tulsa right now.

I own a house, have a good job, and do not have to eat Ramen noodles/not contribute to savings/401k to have Tech Gadgets.

That was my point earlier, these types of posts are getting OLD. People have different priorities, yes, but because you prefer not to spend money on certain things doesn't mean everyone wants a speech everytime the topic comes up.

That's directed at the general you, not you in particular.

I spent $20 on an HTC Droid Eris at Best Buy because I'm not one to spring for the latest fancy wonderphone. The thing worked fine until the last-ever update before they start building the successor, and I'm starting to think they broke it on purpose. Now it's so slow, that I hardly functions at all, even as a phone. Even the clock doesn't do its job. Would I pay more for something that actually works? Yes, but hopefully I won't have to. I have almost two years to go on this sucker. But I love rice and beans...

Matt, Download a free app called Advanced Task Killer.
This app will provide you a visual representation of which apps are running in the background of your handset. What often happens is you have many things running and it slows the processor speeds. This will help you "turn off" the things you do not need running. When you "turn them off" it does not hamper you from later turning them back on.

I'll give it a try, thanks. I haven't downloaded much in addition to what came on it. Just LiveSports, a package tracker and Yellowpages, but if it speeds it up, it's worth it

A phone that can shoot lasers sounds like the coolest thing EVER. Who makes this phone? What service is it on?

As for the OP. I have a phone running Android and I'm really happy with it. I highly recommend this OS.

Just checked both web sites after reading some reviews.

I was thinking that Verizon had a similar plan to Sprint, but in fact, Verizon is about $30 per month more expensive with a smaller discount through my work.

The EVO 4G may have won on that alone.

I noticed the same thing my iPhone last year, sachilles - do you have an EVO?

I think the deal is they build the OS to run on the phones with the bad boy hardware, and every one else ends up with a slow laggy interface.

It comes with the territory of folks who can make cars do amazing things for a grand or two, there's a bit of craaaaazy involved.

I have a few friends that got the EVO on launch day and it surely does live up to the hype. Just make sure you have a very long extension cord.

Well, my Droid Incredible has been incredible (now 3 months). If you like getting down and dirty, you can get into the works of this phone. With the new Google Android tool anyone that cares to can even write their own aps. There are accelerometers in this phone. (Now i'm having grassroots-y data acquisition thoughts...hmmm)

Does this EVO you are all talking about have a turbocharged and intercooled 4 cylinder engine making at least 300 Hp? How about all wheel drive? A silly big wing out back?

I have nothing useful to contribute here. I have only a dumb phone. I do like the way they say droid on the commercials though. Droid. Droid. I'm not sure we can type it without paying George Lucas something though.

Evo 4G, hands down. If you're going for that class of phone you should look at an N900, it's the best (well, software wise, the hardware's starting to look a little dated now) but it requires some skill to use.
