Home air conditioner bit the green weenie on Thursday- the compressor run windings are drawing 72 amps when it tries to start...

So, the air was installed in 1990, the furnace 1987, the water heater 1998 or so. $4500 for air, $9500 for the air and furnace, $11,000 for all three...

I know if I don't do them all, I'll be doing them over the next couple of years...

What crazy kind of 1500$ water heater setup are you running? That's 3 of the tall 40 gallon AO smiths I just installed, 4 maybe 5 of the regular size(not tall) ones.

I'm assuming central HVAC based on those prices, and I can't offer much insight, but 1500 for a water heater seems outrageous.

You can't just get a replacement compressor?

Just keep all of the receipts- you get a big tax deduction this coming year, then.

Just do it. You'll cry once. Patch it up and you'll cry every time it breaks - again.

Needs a new capacitor?

Those prices seem pretty steep. I'm in Ottawa and my furnace and water heater are high efficiency natural gas. If I were to replace all 3 of mine, the total price would be half of what you have been quoted - however your systems may be quite different.

Yeah, Those are pretty steep prices. I just did everything you just listed above for $8200. It's a 3 ton AC setup with the new air handler and all of that. I would shop a bit and trying and get it under 10K unless it's like a 5 ton AC setup.

Even by weird monopoly money Canadian exchange rates that seems like a LOT more money than it should cost for pretty straightforward systems.

While they systems should be really straightforward- one can't be so sure.

But it does pay to get a second and third bid.

He's in Canada - a 50 US gallon Water Heater up here is $1000 and that isn't installed.

Yes, I'm in Canada, and I'm also in Saskatchewan, which is just coming down from a nutso crazy building boom, so everything home related has doubled in price over the last decade.

R22 was banned here 6 or 7 years ago, so no repair on the A/C unit. Plus its 25 years old, so its gonna spring a leak in the condenser soon, anyway.

Furnace and water heater will be upgrading to direct vented exhaust so I can lose my chimney.

I could probably shop around and save 10%, but that's probably about the most. This quote is from a well known local company, where a friend of mine works. I'm far more concerned about whether I should do all 3, or one at a time over the next couple of years.

Not in Canada. We don't get to write off anything related to our primary residence.

I've been patching ours up over the last couple months. I still need to get a clamp-on ammeter to determine whether the compressor is about ready to go($600+installation), but I'm not about to drop the $$ for a full HVAC system just yet. Ours is circa-1995, but not in bad condition otherwise.

Yup, you should bite the bullet and get all 3 replaced. Peace of mind is also worth a lot.

Ya do it. I was looking at my hot water heater last year thinking I should replace it as it was getting on to 20 years old. Three month later it decided to spring a leak and mess things up in my basement.

Do it!!!!

On the other hand my furnace is a Burnham every time the gas's company comes in to change the meter the comment that they run for ever.
