Does anybody know if there are agencies out there that look for engineers on a short-term basis? Most of the contract houses I know (and have worked for) want you to stick around a while, even if your assignment changes.

A little background, I'm 28, 5 years experience in product development with heavy marine/power generation engines, a little aerospace design work, and was in FSAE and Mini Baja when I was in school (M.E.)

I'm basically looking for something to hold me over until I can legally return to Germany in 6 months.

Caterpillar might be looking for contract workers? They hire quite a few contract engineers

Define heavy marine engines? I may know someone that could help you out.

The only thing I can add is that one of the local ship yards got a couple of big contracts from the navy building some new ship(s). Marinette Marine.

In Reply to Enyar: Heavy, as in Caterpillar (MaK) diesels with 460mm bores all the way down to 13 liter high-speed aux engines. Not BIG, but also not small. I have experience with Caterpillar, but to be honest I'd rather not get with them again unless it's direct-hire. They have a nasty habit of kicking all the contract guys out when the numbers look low (the reason I'm out of work now, actually).

While I'm back in the U.S., I wasn't expecting anything more than "CAD-for-hire" type work to come up as short term (3-6 months). Am I mistaken?

I'm looking into this and so far I've determined that it depends on the company. I've seen quite a few larger companies who have both "Student Work/Study Program" as well as "Internship" and some that are "Trainee". I'm interested in what types of jobs I could get with a two-year degree in engineering related field.

The "Student Work/Study Program" was for students in any year of college, preferably after 30 credits or first year in an engineer program.

"Internship" was for juniors or seniors only.

"Trainee" was for entry-level, no experience, but recent graduate.
