Thinking I want to get a cheapo carport/shelter/portable garage to keep the weather off the E39. We're bound to get some snow and ice this winter, and I'm hoping they could at least keep the windows clear of snow and ice.
Primary characteristic: El Cheapo.
Secondary characteristic: Durable enough to last the winter and not blow away ( I realize I may need to weight the legs or tether it somehow, but the structure needs to take some wind. I would hope they all do that).
Is Harbor Freight the answer here?
Yes. The sub $200 portable garage is great for what you're after.
You have teenage boys right? They would help a lot with assembly but it can be done solo if you're a masochist or stretch Armstrong.

Thanks! Yes, I have two boys, and I know at least the one who will benefit from this structure will help.
Oooh. I may need one or two of these. $200 seems reasonable.
Hmm. I actually have a coupon for the 10 x 20 canopy for 99 bucks (thanks GRM!). Then there's the 10 x 17 "portable garage" for 200. It would be a tight fit, but the 530i is just under 16 feet long. Do I want sides? Decisions.... decisions....
The sides and zip up door make it a little nicer if you have neighbors.
Found this too, good to the end of the month
Huh. Guy in the H-F assembly video put a floor in his, but he was using it for storage. I wonder how a floor made of 2x4's laid flat and some 5/8" plywood would do on the ground with a car parking on it? Sounds not good. Don't really want to do gravel. Seems like a lot of bags of Sakrete. I do know a guy who does concrete. I could prolly get a pretty good deal...
I have a huge paved driveway, part of which serves as a basketball court. Is there any reason I couldn't install this over an out-of-the-way place on blacktop? What ties it to Earth? Spikes?

I'm on year six or so of the "temporary" HF parking shelter behind my garage. Pretty damn happy with it. But I'm in Atlanta, so no idea how it handles snow. I can tell you it holds all our yard toys and my scrap lumber pile perfectly.
I really want one. But it would be in the front of the house on a long driveway, and aesthetic wise..not sure how it really will look....
That one in my pictures uses the supplied corkscrew style anchors and ratchet straps.
I wonder if you could run ropes across the bottom and just park on top of them so the weight of the vehicle holds it in place.
I don't have any good pictures of the ground attachment on my phone, that's over at my buddies house. And he just sent me one
The one in the middle is what the supplied ones look like when you hit a rock. He made the rebar ones for the front and they work well, since July anyway.
Ah, well. Wifey shot the idea down. Said it looked "too ghetto." And she has a point, I suppose. There's no convenient place I could hide it, really.
I was hoping to do something similar for my driveway in front of my garage spot to help block the sun/wind/whatever throughout the year. Everything I was seeing was either too weak (basic overhead canopy) or too ghetto (HF).
Family calls my HF tarp garage "The Circus Tent" and I can't say I blame them- though it has handled Nebraska's aggressive weather and vermin pretty well.
Since she shot it down, can you build a lean-to? Duster's threads have shown me the "FREE" section of Craiglist and having some days off can be a great combination.
