As far as why that can't work: it doesn't produce enough power. Voltage =/= power. Power = Amps (current) x Volts.
Basically that's a simplified crystal radio. A full one will work without a battery and produce enough power to drive a very simple and sensitive ear-bud. You're better off trying to generate power by hooking up your land-line phone to a battery and writing "For a good time cal: " in every men's room you visit.
Solar or wind turbine power is much better "free" energy.
