a retired adjuster buddy of mine told me to brake hard … DON'T swerve … if you hit the deer, the ins. co. will pay …if you end up in the ditch, you will pay (or your collision coverage will be used … and that will count against you)
hard to overcome our natural instincts and stay straight

That is exactly what I did. Saw the berkeleyer on the side of the freeway. knew he was going to run but didn't know when. Started applying the brakes and put them on hard when he started moving. Drove the car through the incident. Heard the guy behind me lock them up when he was surprised by the deer rolling over my roof.
Motorsports have definitely helped train me to react differently.
what is super scary is driving I95 in SC, at night, coming home from the Rolex … do this every yr, and am a bit of a nervous wreck by the time I get home … you can see the red reflections off their eyes on the side of the road for a couple hundred miles … so far I've been lucky and they've all stayed where they are and continued grazing … but if I can see a few dozen, I'm sure that there are many MANY more that I can't see

The above is true, with one provision: YOU MUST HAVE COMPREHENSIVE COVERAGE ON YOUR VEHICLE.
One time I let my mom borrow one of my cars; a sweet, baby blue 1990 Town Car w/matching blue interior, and she blew the head off a bear with the driver's side headlight while on the Pa Tpk in aptly-named Bear Creek. When asking all her friends what she should do, they all insisted that her insurance would cover it & not to worry. It made her feel better to know it wasn't her fault but didn't stop to think that A. she didn't have a car or insurance so how would that work anyway, and B. I wasn't carrying comp on that car as it was a back-up to my back-up. She was pissed when I made her pay to fix it, than happy when I gave it to her once it was fixed.
