I bought a truck a couple of weeks ago from Carmax. Today I got the registration and plate. I also got a check for $16 due to overpayment of taxes and registration fees.
I'm not sure what to say about that. They had the money. I would have never known about the discrepancy. They could have bought a couple of beers for their Christmas party but instead, they sent me a check.
Who knew that an honest used car dealer even existed?
If they didn't refund you and you caught it and called them out for it, that's essentialy embezzlement.
It's regulated by the States, as in all of them. They're required to refund it, I've had it happen a few times.
I always find it interesting how different states do things.
In OK, you don't pay any of that to the dealer. You go to the "Tag Agency" where you register the vehicle in your name and then pay the excise tax/registration/etc.
I think I've received a refund every time I've purchased a vehicle through a dealer. They estimate the fees and they always estimate high because they are on the hook for it.
I want to say I once got a refund from the state on a car tag. The check was like for $3 but it’s the thought that counts, right?

They also profit from every additional dollar that (the vast majority of) their customer finance through them. I wouldn't judge their honesty by whether or not they refund you the state taxes and fees overcharging, but rather by how much they overcharged the government taxes and fees. Single and low double digits is good. My last couple cars have been triple digit overage refunds... Which was to my benefit on 'out the door' price negotiations for a cash purchase.
