My subconscious must have been at work this morning. I just walked over to the main building at work to the coffee shop. Two people asked me If I'd dressed like I am today in honor of prince. It threw me at first until I realized I'm wearing all black with a purple paisley tie on!
TMZ is now saying he was treated for opiates w/ the 'save shot' six days before his death.
I always go to TMZ for quality reporting.
In reply to stuart in mn:
They are usually first on the story, and correct, more than anybody else.
In reply to stuart in mn:
I've never been to the site, but even NPR gave them credit for breaking the story yesterday when he passed. I'd never heard of the site until then.
TMZ has a knack for getting the story the firstest. Because they pays well and we all know somebody will rat out a person over some bucks, even if its illegal.
They also tend to get the stories first because they don't have to worry about something known as Journalistic Integrity.

So, how does that give them an advantage over the rest of the "news" industry?
Not an expert, but a few possibilities:
- paying sources makes things easier and can be an issue (motivation to be less than honest)
- not using confirming sources makes things a lot faster but also makes it more likely you publish a bogus story.
Seems to be working out OK for them for now, but there is certainly a good possibility for them to end up in a big CF (not sure that would even hurt them much sadly).

Sorry, left out the /sarcasm/ tag. My point was that the rest of the news industry doesn't worry about journalistic integrity very much either, if at all.
So...Back to Prince.
He is one of my favorite artist, my mother played Prince all through my childhood. Watched Purple Rain, I don't know how many times as a kid. This is sad indeed. The man was a musical genius who my generation really had no appreciation for.
Not a fan of dance music and his flamboyance but man that little man could jam. He could really use that axe. Seemed to have a way with the women too.
I don't follow twitter, but came across this in an article:

As someone that used to work in media, I would say the biggest reason TMZ gets more scoops is that they actually work at it. News these days for the most part has nothing to do with breaking a story, it is waiting for the story to get started and then report it. They wait for the talking point memo or a confirmation that it is OK to report. Very sad what news has become. Most of the good reporting is done unfortunately by people like TMZ, bloggers, or media outlets in other countries.
As to Prince, it is sad. It's not to far fetched to say he influenced about 10 years of pop culture directly. Not just his material that he performed, but the countless other songs he wrote and produced.

I posted this on FB. Best Prince tribute by far. This picture actually had a full page ad in the Detroit Free Press this morning.
Not really a fan, but his talent was Zappaesque, so much music,so little time.

That is a brilliant observation. Zappa was a lot like that. He made a lot of noise I didn't want to hear but the musicianship was unquestionable. I wasn't a fan - It wasn't my taste but I could respect his work anyway.

I'm sorta in the same boat. I realize Prince was a fantastic musician, but the songs that gained airplay and prominence weren't my thing. All the songs that got airplay were a bit too "popular" or "dance" formula for my taste. But, SWMBO is a big purple fan. So when his Musicology tour came to town I sucked it up and offered to get tickets (figuring I was going to "take one for the team". I was very pleasantly surprised at the show. All of the "old popular" songs were redone in a new arrangement and the show was pretty awesome. It made me think again about the influence of corporate music/success/money offers on the artists...In the end I came away thinking he was a great musician, but the general presentation of his music was perverted into a very commercial format.
Don't eat the yellow snow....
Looks like Percocet may be involved.

Netflix used to have this this available for DVD rental. I rented it and was impressed not just by how good he was live, but by the range of music he played. There is version of Hendrix's "Red House" that I wasn't expecting.
In reply to Dr. Hess:
I wouldn't be surprised. From everything is read he was not big into drugs or alcohol but he's had some terrible trouble with his hips. For an amature pain killers can be pretty dangerous. I imagine he didn't have the tolerance of a Keith Richards.
