Laughter and tears are both responses to frustration and exhaustion. I myself prefer to laugh, since there is less cleaning up to do afterward.

You can't be a real country unless you have a beer and an airline. It helps if you have some kind of a football team, or some nuclear weapons, but at the very least you need a beer.

In honor of Valentine's Day, perhaps a little sappy, but true:

"To love at all is to be vulnerable. Love anything, and your heart will certainly be wrung and possibly broken. If you want to make sure of keeping it in tact, you must give your heart to no one, not even an animal. Wrap it carefully round with hobbies and little luxuries; avoid all entanglements; lock it up safe in the casket of your selfishness. But in that casket ~ safe, dark, motionless, airless...it will change. It will not be broken; it will become unbreakable, impenetrable, irredeemable." ~CS Lewis

"...In all the known history of mankind, advances have been made primarily in physical technology; in the capacity of handling the inanimate world about man. Control of self and society has been left to chance or to the vague gropings of intuitive ethical systems based on inspiration and emotion. As a result, no culture of greater stability than about fifty-five percent has ever existed, and these only as the result of great human misery."

Not to take anything away from the late Mr. Haas, but I believe Jon was quoting Dennis "Mad Dog" Menesini from the Cannonball Run (both in real life and in the movie): "If you're going to be a bear, be a grizzly!" Mad Dog appears to have used that line to explain why he dind't care that his short cut onto the Interstate at the start of the race happened to have a chain link fence in the way.

It's certainly possible it didn't originate with Mad Dog either. He's just the first one I can recall.

Give up, just quit, because in this life, you can't win. Yeah, you can try, but in the end you're just gonna lose, big time, because the world is run by the Man. The Man, oh, you don't know the Man. He's everywhere. In the White House... down the hall... Ms. Mullins, she's the "Man. And the Man ruined the ozone, he's burning down the Amazon, and he kidnapped Shamu and put her in a chlorine tank! And there used to be a way to stick it to the Man. It was called rock 'n roll, but guess what, oh no, the Man ruined that, too, with a little thing called MTV! So don't waste your time trying to make anything cool or pure or awesome 'cause the Man is just gonna call you a fat washed up loser and crush your soul. So do yourselves a favor and just GIVE UP! "
